Doin’ the shuffle

In the hosting industry customers do switch hosts from time to time.

It happens.

"It happens"

Customers leave DreamHost and old customers come back to DreamHost. Every day.

It happens to us, and it happens to other hosts.

It’s an endless cycle of creation, destruction, and rebirth.

It's the endless cycle of which we are all a part...

It keeps things interesting and it keeps us on our toes.

There are many reasons for customer churn. Pricing, features, service levels, and positions on hot political issues are just some of the many criteria that a discriminating hosting customer might look for when selecting a home for their website.

“SOPA” has been in the news a lot lately. It’s a piece of legislation that threatens the very nature of the Internet. DreamHost opposes SOPA. Many web hosts do. But not all.

The Save Hosting Coalition explains why SOPA is bad for web hosts. And americancensorship.org explains what’s wrong with SOPA in a great infographic.

If your host has rubbed you the wrong way about SOPA or any other issue, allow us to lather you up with this special offer…

SOPAROPA!

It’s a great way to get yourself up and out of a bad hosting situation, and in to the loving arms of DreamHost – lovers of open-source software, WordPress, free speech, freedom on the Internet, puppies, kittens, and candy.

My DreamHost hosting is up for renewal. Why is this offer for new customers only??

  2. MiquelFire Says:

Wouldn’t 99% of the people reading this already be Dreamhost members?

It would be sweet if you did something for the loyal folk once in a while. Hell, it may already be too late to post this to attract people. Another host posted in their blog about their stance only because the amount of sign ups was 15 times normal, but they had posted in their members only forums (Bots may not even know it exists the way it’s set up) long before the blog post.

“Customers leave DreamHost and old customers come back to DreamHost. Every day.”
    “new customers only”

So… you want me to cancel and come back to get this offer? That new Australian is a marketing GENIUS ;-)

It’s like a mousetrap: Haha, we got you — no cheese for you anymore.

  5. Derrick Says:

Guess “my wife” might be interested in some hosting coincidentally at the same time I’ve grown bored of it ;)

  6. David Says:

I do have few domains with GoDaddy and I don’t mind transfer my domains… too bad this offer is for new customers. phfftt! Now I have to figure out where to transfer my domains. hmm

  7. Atul - Wordpress Themes Says:

It should be for old customers as well.
Do you want that people should go away and then come back to you.

Bt yes, I agree and welcome Dreamhost to not supporting SOPA as SOPA can kill internet dominacy.

  8. Michael Y. Says:

Thanks for this, dreamhost. I’m an existing customer who can’t take advantage of it, but I appreciate you doing your part to make the internet a better place. The fewer customers GoDaddy retains after this debacle, the better off we all are.
I apologize for my fellow customers above, who apparently recognize neither the great good that can cone from defeating SOPA, nor basic marketing.
    Keep up the great work!

  9. William Says:

True DreamHost style: stick it to the current customers.

So tired of constant complainers everywhere I go online. This entitlement “everything needs to be for me” society we are developing is making me sick. The world doesn’t always revolve around you.
