Return of the Dedi

A long time ago in a data center not so far, far away…

We are proud to announce (again) the re-launch of our Dedicated Server product line.  It has been about five years since we last offered a Dedicated solution – an eon in the Internet universe!

So where did Dedicated go in 2006???  I’ll be honest, I’m not going to lie.  He ran away.

Dedicated never felt like he fit in with DreamHost’s other kids.  There’s Shared – she is wildly popular, drop-dead gorgeous and is the president of her sorority.  Our second oldest, Virtual Private Server, (named after his grandfather – we just call him VPS) maintains a 4.0 at one of the Claremont Colleges, excels on the club lacrosse team, and believe it or not, he paints, spelunks, is handy with a crossbow, moonlights as a rodeo clown and can ride a unicycle – backwards.

That leaves the baby of the family, Dedicated.  He isn’t popular, he doesn’t juggle five amazing hobbies, and he doesn’t dominate academics and sports.  He used to spend most of his time in his basement bedroom playing video games, and occasionally would pop up to the kitchen to grab a yoo-hoo and a Lunchables.  Let’s just say he didn’t have much direction back then.  Well, he flew the coop to travel the world and really find himself.  Last we had heard, he was island hopping down the coast of Croatia.

Now Dedicated is back!  He’s ambitious, focused and in it to win it – not unlike Michael J. Fox in The Secret of My Success.

Dedicated is ready to show the business world that it takes more than just a power tie, slick hair cut, and a hot cup of Tiger’s Blood to climb up the corporate ladder.

The Dedicated Servers are available today and are currently offered in three configurations – Half Moon, Full Moon and Blue Moon.  Half Moon is the entry-level server that has a dual-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive.  Best of all, it only costs $69/month, and includes unlimited bandwidth and a managed backup of the site.

You may be murmuring to yourself, “hmm, what’s so great about a dedicated box?” I’m glad you asked!  Er, quietly asked yourself.  Anyway, I’ll tell you.  Dedicated Server is a perfect hosting solution when you need maximum performance.  An advanced user like a software developer could use Dedicated to run complex applications, or a business could handle monstrous databases or perform tons of geoip lookups.  In these scenarios, the customer should have sole access to the CPU and RAM resources in order for everything to run smoothly.

Choose Dedicated and go right to Ludicrous Speed.  Don’t worry, going to plaid is still in fashion, but I digress.

Dedicated Servers are available for existing VPS and Shared customers in the web panel, as well as for purchase on DreamHost.com.  If an existing customer has already prepaid for a year, then no need to fret. We can prorate your account and apply it to a new Dedicated plan.

So, if you need more performance and don’t want to share the CPU/ RAM anymore, then move out of your Shared frat house or say goodbye to your roommates in the VPS condo, and step up to your very own home in Dedicated-ville.

Home sweet home.

What CPU do the servers use?

  2. Anand Says:

    That’s great brent,

I am asking again, do you have any plan for reselling Dreamhost services(shared, dedicated and VPS).. please reply

  3. Tim Says:

    @Dreamhost

Can the dedicated servers be managed like VPS.

    Meaning, I personally don’t have to upgrade/install MySQL/PHP/NGINX/etc.

  4. David J Says:

The current dedicated servers CPU clockspeeds are 2.2 GHz (minimum). Some may be faster. As we add more servers to the mix they will be faster still. Because they are not uniform the speeds are not listed on our site.

  5. Leigh Says:

Stupid question… but if the 2GB, dual core dedicated server is $69/mo, why on earth would anyone pay $100/mo for the 2GB VPS? Is VPS pricing that far out of whack, is this just a limited time offer for the dedicated servers, or am I missing something that you get with the VPS that you don’t get with dedicated servers?

  6. neb Says:

Nice. How about a bundle discount for customers who also (in addition) maintain shared/VPS services? This would be a strong incentive to keep everything at DH.

  7. Eric J Says:

Is there anything to prevent people from installing game server software on this?

  8. neb Says:

@Eric J: I’ve been hosting a custom (alpha) game server using DH’s VPS service, and I’m considering the dedicated option. DH’s policies/services/support have been fine. After a number of frustrating unannounced reboots (very disruptive to game hosting), I’m now at 91 days of uptime. Here’s hoping the dedicated boxes are even more stable.

@DH: Can you tell us what the link throughput will be?

  9. Miles. Says:

Disappearing and appearing at will is, no doubt, the secret to my success.

  10. Steven B Says:

@Tim: The dedicated servers can be managed just like VPS. You can use the current panel to add users and domains to dedicated machines. Also like VPS, you can disable DreamHost management after you create an admin user if you prefer to set everything up yourself.

  11. Ivan Iraci Says:

What about a free dedicated server for the ones that lost several gigabytes of data and where left without a single site working after the (officially, at least) death of a singole drive on moran (one of the servers assigned to shared hosting customers)? At least we could monitor hardware status and manage backups on us own…

  12. Ivan Iraci Says:

    %/us own/our own/g

  13. marhgil Says:

I’ve added the dedicated server and was surprised to find out that i can’t have both MySQL on both dedicated and VPS active. Basically, I already have 2 MySQL servers, on the VPS and on the Dedicated, and I can’t use them both. Technical support told me I have to choose 1 and I can’t use both! That sucks! Can you fix this, please?

  14. jukebox1 Says:

    Hi,

Can you please publish a clear comparative description of VPS and dedicated ?

I guess that Dedicated are not managed and users have to update themselves ?

    Thanks.

  15. Dustin Says:

The blog post says $69/month, but the pricing page and the control panel dashboard for dedicated says $89/month?

  16. Brett Says:

    Hi Dustin,

We sold out of our initial round of dedicated servers much faster than we’d anticipated. Unfortunately we have no more of the $69 machines in stock. $89 is the new entry-level package.

It pays to check the blog regularly! :)

  17. Huns Says:

I need to know if you guys are going to offer Serious Business processors.

I’m hosting game servers, and the speed of a single core matters. In fact, it matters A Whole Lot. I’d need to be able to order a SPECIFIC CPU from a FANCY LIST OF SOME SORT. Almost every dedicated server provider on the whole entire planet does this.

Someone who’s doing something experimental/low volume may be satisfied with “four cores.” If you want to sell to someone like me, who could eventually wind up renting tens or even hundreds of machines, you better come up with something better than “yo it’s hella cool, it has four cores and some gigahurtz or whatever.”

  18. Huns Says:

BTW, I am talking about 3GHz plus, Core i5/i7 type stuff. I don’t care if it’s Xeon or not because that’s just extra cost that doesn’t really do anything for my app. All that 2.x GHz business is okay, but I can literally get that anywhere for a reasonable price.

There are places where you can get a 2.x GHz processor for ~150 per month, and then there are places (like Rackspace) where you can get 3.x GHz processors for $1,000 and an anal probe per month. There is a HUGE gap there just waiting for someone who can support a dedicated server operation to swoop in and start making money off it. People who are doing serious (not oversold) GSP stuff, high performance computing, etc. need faster processors, but don’t necessarily have the budget to get reamed and steamed by Rackspace. (Plus, with Rackspace you practically get your own indentured servant. I can run my own boxes and don’t need their help, so all that extra money is for nothing.)

By the way, you WILL include IPMI/some other kind of INSTANT KVM support. If you don’t, no one in the Serious Business sector is going to give you a second look.

  19. neb Says:

I was seriously disappointed to see that the $69 machines “sold out” (ie, entry level price went up). I agree that more details about the machines would be welcome, especially now that I am reevaluating my options due to the new price point. From my point of view, the $89 Half Moon service is identical to the prior $69 Half Moon service. I’m sure DH is computing how much to charge based on recouping its investment over some period of time, and the new entry point machines were more expensive, but customers would like to know what they’re actually getting. Even if you don’t offer specific hardware options (as Huns suggests), I would like to know the specs.
