Donations for January

February 1, 2010 on 11:40 am | In Updates by Brett | 17 Comments

November through January we solicited donations from our customers for a worthy organization: Therapeutic Living Centers for the Blind.

Therapeutic Living Centers for the Blind

TLC is a community of learners and teachers who have come together to create a supportive and encouraging environment for those with developmental disabilities and blindness. More than a facility, TLC represents a family working together to support each individual in order to develop his or her unique strengths.

11 of our customers made donations totaling $378, which we then matched for a total of $756. While our matching period may have ended, you can always submit donations to TLC directly.

TLC joins a long list of non-profit organizations to which our customers have contributed over the past several years.

Current customers can visit the Home / Give to Charity section of their account control panel to submit donations at any time. The charge will appear on your next hosting bill and we’ll match anything you’re able to give. We host nearly a million domains now and know that far more than 11 of you are capable of supporting something larger than yourself, so please do!

We’ve chosen to support Home for Women & Children of Shiprock, New Mexico as our next donation target.

They’re a non-profit shelter providing safe harbor for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Please consider making a donation if you haven’t already.

Thanks!

isnt like haiti a more pressing matter? humm? i would add a donation if there was one for haiti, just saying…

  2. Schmalls Says:

There are already so many supplies trying to get into Haiti. You should wait 6 months to a year and then donate to relief for Haiti. That’s when they may actually need more and the media won’t be focused on it anymore.

  3. Josh Jones Says:

Exactamundo, actually we plan to do a haiti-related effort next time, so in about three months.

I would have did once i earn some money :-/

  5. Mike Frisco Says:

So many people are giving to Haiti right now, and as a result many smaller worthy charities are suffering as donation funds are redirected.

Bravo to DreamHost for helping out the smaller groups who do very important work and don’t get the benefit of national media coverage. Helping battered women and abused children is every bit as important a cause as helping earthquake victims, albeit not as trendy.

    @Dreamhost

Any word on you deploying Facebook’s new PHP performance module?

    You guys are awesome.

I’m crazy excited to hear Facebook stating that HipHop PHP works for both Apache and NGINX (both supported by Dreamhost).

    Yay!

  8. Andrew F Says:

@Ted: HipHop isn’t a drop-in replacement for the standard PHP interpreter – it leaves out several features, including the eval function, which can’t be efficiently implemented in a compiled language. Since Facebook hasn’t released all the details yet, I can’t say what it’ll take for us to support HipHop, but I’m hoping that it’ll allow users to compile a FastCGI version of a PHP application, which will work “out of the box” on our servers.

  9. Warll Says:

Ha! As part of my “become Dreamhost’s most unprofitable customer” campaign I just donated a whole 25 dollars, thats a whooping five dollars more than what I payed for two years hosting.

Now to go use some more bandwidth and databases.

    Great stuff on the charities.

I’m looking forward to picking apart HipHop PHP as well, unfortunately, the link Facebook gives to GitHub doesn’t work at this point.

Here’s my post on HPHP (on a Dreamhost-hosted blog):

    Hey,
In the signup process I am not given the chance to enter any coupon code. I was about to enter the “777″ coupon code you advertise in this blog. How can I make use of that code?
    Thanks
