For some of you, it’s that time of the year again.. holiday shopping!
I say some of you not because some of you are not Christian, Jewish, African, or employed, but because some of you are not early holiday shoppers.
For those of us already finished with our seasonal purchases, it’s that time of the year again.. holiday sleeping!
Now, when I was young, early holiday shopping meant at least ONE of the big boxes under the tree wasn’t filled with an “I O U: 1 Cobra Terror Drome – SANTA!” But nowadays, thanks to the influences of my lovely spouse, I’ve been able to get all my shopping (apart from gifts for her) done E A R L Y.

What’s my secret?
It’s easy!
She gets everything! Her family, my family, her friends, my friends, everything! The only thing I have to get IS my gifts for her!
And man, she starts EARLY. Like, it’s an all year thing. If she sees something that would be perfect for my brother in May, BOOM she buys it for Christmas. If she finds a sweater on sale in February that would look great on her mom… POW bought and stored. If she comes across an amazing deal on Zhu Zhu Hamsters December 26th.. well, they’ll probably still be popular next holidays too, right?
It’s weird. I mean, compared to how I was brought up (which I’m 100% sure is the norm) it’s down-right un-American. But, I’ve slowly come around. Sadly, I’ve started to find myself buying things in the spring with an eye towards December. And not just me.. DreamHost too!

Remember in the last post when I mentioned how we bought (some of) Alchemy Communications back in May? Well, here it is, December, and that forward thinking is finally starting to pay off… for you!
In honor of our new relationship (and by using ex-DreamHost shared hosting servers) Alchemy has just started offering Dedicated Servers at pretty much the best deal you can get anywhere (we checked!):
All for just $49.95/month!

Now, these servers are from Alchemy, not DreamHost, which means they’re just hardware… meant for those that know what to do with it. But, they do come with great 24/7/365 (phone!) support in the same data centers we use!
(get $5 more off when you follow this link)
Supplies are limited!

So even if you don’t need a dedicated server now, be like my wife and buy one anyway!

Now, I know what you’re thinking.. “ooooh, you’re going to be sleeping on the couch tonight!”
But I’m not worried, you know why? Because my wife doesn’t read this blog! In fact, I’m so sure she won’t read this, I’m going to post what I’m planning on getting her for Christmas right here:
I’m going to look through her paperbackswap.com account and library on hold lists and get her dozens of books from her wait list! She’s recently gotten into, um, “paranormal romance.” Thanks a lot Twilight!
That was fun! Hey, why doesn’t everybody post in the comments what they’re getting their partner for Christmas. Don’t worry, they’re not going to read it! To give you an idea of the kind of readership levels we have here at the Official DreamHost Weblog, even my MOM doesn’t read it.
I’d post what I’m getting her for Christmas here but my wife didn’t tell me.

Josh, you forgot one thing… We can show her! We see her EVERYTIME she drops off the flowers on our desks. I’m not that mean, though. Ok, I am but…

I’m liking your new dedicated server deal, that is cheap, but the last time I looked was in 2005 so I may be off!

Buying a gift for the trouble and strife is fraught with danger.
You might think about getting her some clothes, for example. If they are too small, she’ll get all upset and start crying. If they are too big, she’ll be furious with you for overestimating her size. The risk is too great for clothes.
How about electronics? Another iffy area. It means it will be you who has to read the manual, charge it up, show her how to use it and fix it if it gets broken. Even something as awesome as a dedicated server would mean you would have to be dedicated to dealing with every conceivable aspect of it on her behalf.
Jewelry? Hell, no. Have you watched any of the TV commercials for jewelry this year? Everything is tasteless shite, often designed (my ass) by half-witted celebrities. Anything that looks halfway decent is billions of dollars.
My best advice? Don’t get her something special. Instead, get her something that makes her feel special. If you think of anything that fits that bill, please post back here and tell us all so that we can all rush out and buy it!

Oh crap. An extra emphasis tag appeared out of nowhere in my post above. Stoopid WordPress.

@Josh
Wahoo!!!
Just to ask … how much extra would you charge to get a Dreamhost Panel on one of those wicked nice dedicated servers?
December 5th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
Yay! We now have your address:
http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting-colocation.html
If I’m ever in CA I will be sure to drop in…
with some shaving cream balloons! :P

Why is it impossible to find out what the price is for the *second* year?
December 5th, 2009 at 10:34 pm
Jim: That’s just the data center. They won’t let you in there without an ID badge! Also they have scary guard dogs and sub-machine guns. Seriously, it’s not worth it.
December 6th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
I’m serious, BTW. I would really consider getting this, but the prices say they’re for the first year. Nowhere is there information on what the price is after that.

Josh, you forgot one thing… We can show her! We see her EVERYTIME she drops off the flowers on our desks. I’m not that mean, though. Ok, I am but…

@Josh
How much extra would this 4 GB ($49/mo) dedicated server cost if the Panel was added on it from Dreamhost?
I hope it wouldn’t cost $400/mo … since that’s almost 10x just for the panel :(
December 8th, 2009 at 9:37 pm
Which version of Linux comes installed? Can we choose?
December 8th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
So these cheap servers are not managed ?
What about paying a little more to get them managed ? Because it’s anyway a lot cheaper than dreamhost ps !
Thanks.
December 8th, 2009 at 11:57 pm
The servers are not the specs that you listed. Also, you did not mention that the $49.95 a month is only when you pre-pay a year. 2.6 ghz AMDs are not 2.4 ghz Xeons.
Come on now. I got excited for no reason at all.
December 9th, 2009 at 3:19 am
“on the first one year anniversary the monthly fee for the Dedicated Server will increase to $89.95; with every one year anniversary thereafter, prices on all services then in effect will be increased by 5%. “
December 9th, 2009 at 6:00 am
So within 5 years your monthly hosting bill will have increased to $115/month or 28%! Thanks, but no thanks.
December 9th, 2009 at 8:56 am
I agree that it is quite annoying and not the expected dh-style to offer something that will increase in cost after a year – but what is really DIRTY is the “YOU-ARE-STUPID-and-we -write-something-very-clever-in-small-letters-down-here”-STAR attached on this offer is offending. Far away from beeing an xmas-special, more a special expected by banksters. :)
anyway, nice xmas to all!!!
December 9th, 2009 at 9:46 am
Agreed with the general sentiments of the most recent posts. This is not Dreamhost’s style, and is tantamount to bait-and-switch. I’m really disappointed and quite frankly disturbed to see Dreamhost being even tangentially a party to something like this.
December 9th, 2009 at 11:40 am
Yeah, after all:
1)Processor: 2.4GHz Quad Core was a 2.6GHz AMD Opteron DUAL Core.
2) $49.95/month was only for the first year in advance, $599.40, the next year $89.95, the third year with the 5% increase: $94.45 and 5% increase every year after.
Amazing, while those servers will get older and customers will pay more and more!
3) Has anyone found the proper link for this statement: “If you sign up with this link, get another FIVE DOLLARS off!”
I’ve also got exited for no reason at all… =(
Leave it on $50.- per month one year in advance pay and you’ll probably have a deal…
December 9th, 2009 at 11:52 am
I was incredibly excited about this until I saw the horrific fine print. Seriously DH, this is nowhere near your style. With your “controlling stake” in the company, can’t you change this to something closer to a respectable business practice? It’s textbook bait-and-switch as-is.
Wake me when it’s viable.
December 9th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
Getting this in my inbox today I was pretty much ready to buy in there as well; having seen the actual deal, I must say I need to concur with the other commenters. This isn’t like Dreamhost to promote something with such a blob of fine print. Not only is it going to price double, but also a year-on-year price increase? Hardware gets old, and bandwidth gets cheaper, so why the price goes up?
Not cool.
December 9th, 2009 at 9:54 pm
Yep, I thought about it but I already have a VS at $10/mo plus the regular price (prepaid for two years) and I have unlimited disk space and unlimitedband width. Why would I want to downgrade to 250 GB storage and 1TB of bandwidth and pay more?
December 10th, 2009 at 9:40 am
Yeah I’ll agree too. I was pretty thrilled to see this until I read the fine print… >=(
December 11th, 2009 at 1:13 am
Yeah, I agree too.
And it is a shame to have to come here and read all comments for full details…
Dedicated cheapest than VPS, it would have been astonishing ;-)
December 12th, 2009 at 9:12 am
I’m almost certain that fine print wasn’t the the first time I asked, too, although I’m willing to give the benefit of the doubt and assume I was temporarily blind.
Still, bad form, DreamHost, I’ve come to expect better from you.
December 14th, 2009 at 7:59 am
Chartbeat integration …. nice, I like
December 14th, 2009 at 5:38 pm
While we are close to Alchemy, they are an independent company that does things their own way. I think this is still a pretty good deal overall, but I’m passing on your comments to them for consideration.
December 15th, 2009 at 9:43 pm
Hi all. When our pals at DreamHost told us that the Alchemy Dedicated Server 5% automatic annual increase was causing issues for some, we here at Alchemy decided to remove the increase from the conditions. We also noted comments about the “fine print” at the bottom of the page and decided to increase the size of that text to be the same as found on the rest of the page. Thank you for your interest.
December 16th, 2009 at 11:24 pm
very useful..thanks..
January 2nd, 2010 at 6:51 pm
Wow! That’s a cheap vps! want it want it! :D
