If it's a bright, clear day outside, you may instinctively reach for your sunglasses when you head for the door.. But you probably do think about sunglasses when you go to buy a new pair -- whether you walk into the discount store or the Sunglass Hut at the mall, you are immediately struck by the bewildering array of choices before you! The style of the frame and size of the lenses also make a difference. Is that $200 pair of Serengeti sunglasses really any better than a $10 pair from the flea market?

This comment is actually in response to the “Democracy at DreamHost, part 2” blog post, which ironically enough, is now closed to comments, as I can't find a "leave a reply" option in that post.

I like that DreamHost is a democratic company, and I want to support that, but unfortunately the customer at Dream Host really isn't a part of that democracy. The Suggestions system is as close as the customer gets to being allowed to participate, and that ain't very close. Look at the communication and information flow inside the company described in the blog post, and then look at the free-for-all suggestions system. Yeah, the suggestions system is kinda good in the sense that it's better than nothing, but all it is is a popularity contest, where ideas have to be not too complicated to attract attention and bubble to the top. Sometimes the best ideas are the ones that initially leave everyone scratching their heads and going "huh?" There are some ideas that I am aware of that need to get implemented yesterday to fix certain things about DH's operation that are beyond broken and are frankly idiotic, but these ideas just don't bubble to the top in the suggestions system. I don't think dreamhost should be too quick to pat it's self on the back because it's more democratic than a world full of obtuse and idiotic companies. That isn't saying much. And this, folks, is my input into the democratic decision making process at DreamHost. Do with it what you will.
