Free Hosting from DreamHost is Here
January 9, 2009 on 11:39 am | In Business, Dreamhost Apps, New Features, Promotions, Updates by Brett | 275 CommentsWhen we started DreamHost back in 1997, we were in it to make money. Throw up a server, get some customers, collect fat checks, retire at 35. Simple!
Somewhere along the way (I think it was shortly after the fat checks showed up) we developed a conscience and decided – No fat checks!

For us it wasn’t enough to just not be evil – we realized that the only way to really feel good about ourselves was to lose money hand over fist, and just hope that we broke even somewhere along the way…kind of like a non-profit!
We took a multi-pronged approach to Operation Money Loss! We resolved to:
- Provide our employees the most comprehensive health insurance package we could find, free.
- Give away free hosting to non-profit organizations.
- Match customer donations to selected charitable organizations.
- Offset our carbon footprint through the purchase of renewable energy credits and carbon offsets.
- Provide financial support to open-source projects that we use ourselves – Jabber, MySQL, Linux-VServer, and grsecurity to name a few!
- Consistently offer ridiculous coupons that, even now, seem like a bad idea.
- Keep all our company cash in the stock market.
I’d call that a good start, but it’s just not enough.
Today we’re announcing DreamHost Apps, a completely free hosting service for web-based applications.
Well, it’s free for now anyway. We’re flirting with the idea of a $50 yearly fee once it’s out of beta…but if you sign up RIGHT NOW to help us test things out we’ll let you use DreamHost Apps for free for ever!

But wait! If you’re reading this and you’re already a DreamHost customer (and why else would you be reading this), you don’t need to worry.. you can already log in to DreamHost Apps with your same DreamHost Web Panel login!
For you, it’s really just an Ajax-ified way to manage your easy one-clicks and any domain registrations. But, for the hundred or so people out there who’ve read this blog and aren’t DreamHost customers… but do want some free hosting of a WordPress Blog, Drupal Site, Zenphoto Gallery, Mediawiki Wiki, and/or PhpBB Forum (plus Google Apps and Gmail) and aren’t afraid to do a little “beta testing” (and unlike some other web shops, when we say beta, we mean it), today must be your BIRTHDAY!

Right now usage of DreamHost Apps is by invitation only. Lucky for you I like your face and I’ve posted about 100 invitation codes in the comments of this post. If a code doesn’t work, it’s already been redeemed – try another one! When the codes run out, I may even post more!
If you’re a current DreamHost customer you’ve already had access to DreamHost Apps for months! That’s because the exact same functionality (minus the free part) can be found under “Easy Mode” in the “Goodies / One-Click Installs” section of your account control panel. There’s no need for you to sign up for DreamHost Apps because you’re already living the dream!
DreamHost Apps customers do miss out on a few perks that paying DreamHost customers take for granted, though. Apps users can just forget about FTP access, SSH access, email, and even technical support.
DreamHost Apps is provided ‘as-is’, and unfortunately technical support is not part of the ‘is’!

You try providing tech support for a free service and let us know how that works out.
For all intents and purposes, DreamHost Apps are entirely self-contained.

You can install and delete any number of apps through the DreamHost Apps management interface, and you’ll use each Apps’ own web-based interface to make application-level changes. Upgrading to full-featured hosting is just a click away!
DreamHost Apps was assembled over the course of a few months by a small team of four hardworking DreamHost Employees, Pete V, Mike P, Joshua H, and me, Brett D. In fact, this is the first major DreamHost project that Josh Jones hasn’t been personally involved in writing in a very long time, so rest assured that your data is safe and your credit card won’t be charged more than it should be!

If you find any bugs, please post them over in our DreamHost Apps discussion forum.
We’ve been working on this for a while, and we’re kind of tired. We’re just gonna take a quick little nap if you don’t mind…

Please enjoy DreamHost Apps!

Allow dhapps freebie users to download database dumps and all data such as pics uploaded to wordpress/drupal sites and you, my gid sirs, control the most trust-worthy, free (blog) hosting on the internet, with no lock-in whatsoever.
Allowing users some kind of ability to dump/backup uploaded data would be *real* advantage over other free and easy to use app providers out there… even installing a database dump plugin in the dhapp Wordpress setup would be beyond awesome compared to what the competition provides.

+1 for what Thomas (#6) had to say.
January 9th, 2009 at 7:14 pm
Oh Dreamhost, you’re the greatest. I just hope all those Wordpress sites have wp-cache enabled by default!!!
January 9th, 2009 at 8:38 pm
Thanks very much ^_^
January 9th, 2009 at 9:53 pm
Wow! I can get Google Apps for free now! Thanks! I guess the only upside here is that DH provides the necessary DNS entries to make this happen.
January 10th, 2009 at 3:03 am
On a normal DH account you can get a monthly total backup of your sites. DH must make this available as well on DH-Apps.

I’ve spent the morning researching other web hosts. I need my web sites to show up within a few seconds when someone clicks on them, and apparently that’s a service that Dreamhost no longer provides. I’ve also had customer service requests in for a day or two, also no response. I notice that lately, Dreamhost does not even bother to respond when capone, the server I am hosted on, goes down. I went to your service area and even your blog, however when I searched for items related to capone, and private server, the only posts that showed up were reports of office parties with photos of scantily-clad women. Those pages popped right up, by the way.
I need to know if I can relocate my domains to a server other than capone, with an average load factor much less than 2000 which is where capone seems to be. I need to know if and how I can upgrade to a Private Server, and if that is going to help performance, or if I’m just going to be in the same position, no service and leaving support messages which go unanswered.
I really think that Dreamhost needs to address this problem right now. I understand that service is super-cheap, but I thought that this was the inducement to sign up. You omitted to mention “frequent downtime and tardy support”. The ease of use and so forth with Dreamhost is fantastic, but at the end, if there is no web site, it’s a problem. Thank you.
January 10th, 2009 at 10:53 am
Paying Customer, shouldn’t you be, like, contacting Dreamhost? Not posting a comment in the blog?
January 10th, 2009 at 11:07 am
…So… A blind man and his dog walked in to a nude bar… After sniffing here and there the dogs starts barking at one of the nude waitresses… the bartender, who was also the owner and was watching closely, asked the the blind man if he could make his dog stop barking or leave the bar as this was disturbing to his other costumers… I wasn’t aware I was in a Bar, said the blind man, I asked my dog to take me to DH’s offices, I assumed the loud music was part of one of their parties… – What exactly did you tell the dog? Asked the bartender, explaining that DH’s office where in the other side of town… The blind man replies… well… I told him to get me ‘Hot Servers’.
The dogs’s name was Josh.
Just kidding Josh! Love ya.
January 10th, 2009 at 11:27 am
Curse you, El Diablo. CURSE YOU!
January 10th, 2009 at 11:32 am
All invitation codes seems to be used. Please send me the invitation code.
January 10th, 2009 at 11:40 am
Drupal install seems to be running php 4. That’s not great.
No access to subdomain settings in DH panel to change to php5.
No access to DB in DH panel.
No FTP access
If I weren’t a DH customer and had invested time in this “App” model, only to upgrade to full hosting, I would be very disappointed, as I’d expect my access to now be “full”.
January 10th, 2009 at 11:46 am
Are there any working invitation codes left? Please mail me if possible. Thanks in advance.
Atul.

January 10th, 2009 at 7:03 pm
@Ape Con Myth: Done!
January 10th, 2009 at 7:05 pm
As someone who has always thought that off-topic comments about bad service were ridiculous, as a DH customer for years now (with many problems but always some sort of light at the end of the tunnel) and as a PS and MySQL PS customer I was shocked today to see that the “guaranteed” PS server, MySQL in this case, couldn’t optimize my table in less than 4 hours, in fact it could not do it at all, so it crashed. Unfortunately the “repair table” query suffers the same fate. My oldish cheapest at the time laptop can do these to the same database in under 10 minutes, but a 4GB guaranteed memory burstable to 2.3ghz server cannot?! Yeah, right.
So anyway, 17 hours later without a reply in sight, after numerous failed attempts to resurrect this table I am left with the prospect of … waiting. Even a couple of years ago when there were a few system-wide outages I could expect a reply in a reasonable amount of time.
Anyway, the point is, this new service you are offering is maybe hasty … I get the point, you draw the newbies in with the “free” hosting, then if their sites succeed (ie, have more than 10 visits per day from more than 1 ip) then you “offer” hosting. Nothing wrong with that, try before you buy and so on, but I would suggest redirecting these team members working on this little project to handle some support requests, set some goals, like “critical, site down reports” to be handled within n hours. The first time, honestly, since the beginning of hosting here (quite long ago now) do I feel like giving up (something which no amount of power/router/server outages could make me think before).
January 10th, 2009 at 7:12 pm
I would also like a invitation code…
Thank you!
Najah
January 10th, 2009 at 7:13 pm

El Diablo scares me… let me past him please T_T
January 10th, 2009 at 8:22 pm
Where the control panel for administering DNS?
I am using my own domain, and i want to pointing to DNS dreamhost, how i can do that?
January 10th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
Gar! Ninja was putting child to sleep and missed out on code availability. Snap.
January 10th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
Hai! It appears other users tried my tactic of working randomly from the bottomish of the list to the top in hopes of grabbing one of the last ones. As I worked my way about half way up, one of them worked! Thank you El Diablo.
January 10th, 2009 at 9:17 pm
As Sleep Deprivation Ninja found, there were more codes added (while used ones were cleared) a couple of hours ago. You might want to try combing thru the list and seeing if one works for you.
Just a friendly suggestion.
January 10th, 2009 at 9:20 pm
@invaleed You will need to go to your registrar and point the nameservers to:
ns1.dreamhost.com
ns2.dreamhost.com
ns3.dreamhost.com
If the domain was purchased through dreamhost, it will have the nameservers already pointed to Dreamhost.
Have fun! :)
January 10th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
THANKS!!!
January 10th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
hope i’ll be invited… :D
January 10th, 2009 at 10:58 pm
Wow, this is huge!
I’m gonna cover it on my blog!
January 10th, 2009 at 11:16 pm
I just used one around the middle and it was available on my first try.
January 10th, 2009 at 11:24 pm
Codes are hot now! Start from the bottom and work up.
The 2nd and 3rd from the bottom were both new.
January 11th, 2009 at 1:03 am
Invite pls
10x!
January 11th, 2009 at 1:51 am
Hello
You didn’t provide info about DNS pointing when sign up, luckily I know how to do that, but a lot of news internet users would feel really frustated for sure when they found there’s no info in the panel, or even a help link.
Just a comment
January 11th, 2009 at 2:17 am
Invite code pls!
3ks
January 11th, 2009 at 2:21 am
This is not a fair idea for the beta usage.Since I come up every time all the codes are redeemed and I m from India almost 12+ hrs difference is there.Once again if new codes are provided I m sure it will be redeemed in an hour or less.
I suggest sending a request mail to claim the code will be a better option…
January 11th, 2009 at 2:30 am
I completed the signup process and in the confirmation on the website, https://panel.dreamhostapps.com/manage does not have an index, did you mean https://panel.dreamhostapps.com?
January 11th, 2009 at 2:46 am
Thanks buddy and luckily one of the code worked out for me..
smashtech.dreamhosters.com
January 11th, 2009 at 2:54 am
Hi,
The codes are not working, Please send me one code.
January 11th, 2009 at 3:36 am
Yeah, I agree with fasil. Let us request a code, or publish much much more codes!
January 11th, 2009 at 3:44 am
request code, please.
January 11th, 2009 at 3:56 am
If everyone started their pointless posts with that same intro, they’d still be just as pointless.
Was the change from noticing people weren’t too bright, to joining them, supposed to be an impressive accomplishment?
January 11th, 2009 at 3:56 am
dudes,
the first code worked for me.
persist FTW!
January 11th, 2009 at 4:40 am
Thanks for the new codes, got one done now
Note: The zenphoto and drupal are not working or rather not getting installed or deleted.
Since this is beta and you expect us to report problems
:p
January 11th, 2009 at 6:19 am
“Was the change from noticing people weren’t too bright, to joining them, supposed to be an impressive accomplishment?”
You just haven’t seen the light, if your ticket about a broken PS server, which means a down site, and which you pay a fair price for goes unnoticed for 27+ hours while dreamhost is boasting about new features, it leaves a slightly bitter taste in the mouth.
If you didn’t get it the first time, I’ll spell it out (shame there can be no drawing here), for all those people who felt the need to express their utter powerlessness at the hands of an unresponsive support (the irony) team I today feel a little more sympathy and empathy. It doesn’t mean that this critique is rational but when there is nothing left to do but wait, and 27 hours of downtime is something a big (not mission critical but busy) website cannot afford too often.
All the best.
January 11th, 2009 at 10:52 am
can i get invite too ? :D
please :D
January 11th, 2009 at 11:09 am
Code please!!!
January 11th, 2009 at 11:22 am
@Nen You are right to be unhappy about this response time. Our support team is currently dealing with more incoming support than normal, but it’s not due to DreamHost Apps.
We found your support request in our support queue (you didn’t include much identifying info to go on here!) and we’ve identified a misconfiguration on your MySQL PS server that would cause the exact problems you’ve described. We’ll be fixing that up for you right now and giving you some service credit.
January 11th, 2009 at 11:40 am
Wordpress 2.7 is installed. Many of the themes are outdated, and do not support widgets. We’re unable to add or modify a theme. Same with plugins.
Will this change?
January 11th, 2009 at 12:13 pm
Google provides tech support for all of their free services. Works out well for them. Granted, their budget is a little larger then yours. ;)
January 11th, 2009 at 12:21 pm
Hi there!
Can I get an invite code, please?
Thanks!
January 11th, 2009 at 12:46 pm
LBSCR works for me
January 11th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
No more left :-(
January 11th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
where are the codes?????????
January 11th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
owww good
January 11th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
@Dallas
Thank you, I can confirm that the situation has been handled by your support team.
I really don’t mind occasional problems because they must occur, for the price offered the service is as it should be, if it wasn’t so I wouldn’t be on DH for the past however many years it has been.
Simply I had a bad experience with support over this issue, which coincided with “salt on the wound” in the shape of new services by DH, I hope it was as you say a combination of factors not a new reality of support here at DH.
Back on topic, as I said good luck with this new service.

I have an idea: You want people to help you test things out? Come to Gaia (www.gaiaonline.com) and post in the “Computers & Technology” Forum! Just mention the word “free” and “beta”, and I bet a bunch of those geekheads will come test things out for you!
Btw, yes, I’m there too – but I’m helping *them* test their new MMORPG – zOMG! (www.gaiaonline.com/zomg/ )
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going back to my email bag….
January 11th, 2009 at 9:01 pm

I got a code. I did try installing Drupal. It didn’t work. I keep getting a plain mesage :
“# It doesn’t seem like tuwatch.com has been set up for phpbb.dreamhost.com?”
What does that mean? What am I supposed to do?
January 12th, 2009 at 5:41 am

Bug Report: Drupal and zenPhoto are not getting installed even after 24 hours.
Seems to be a bug as lot of other people have also reported the same. Is anybody from DreamHost Apps working on this? DNS Active is complete, Installing is half done for both of these.
January 12th, 2009 at 6:29 am
I would like an invite code too!!!
Pretty Please :)
January 12th, 2009 at 6:52 am
Invitation…please? Please? :)
January 12th, 2009 at 7:02 am
Yeah, I managed to have ZenPhoto installed on my previous existing (and paid) account, but not on the free one. Plus, I tried to delete it but the delete process doesn’t work.
A question: you can install apps in subdomains (e.g. blog.user.dreamhosters.com), but if you go to user.dreamhosters.com nothing exist there. On the web panel it says that you should go to Google Apps with that address but it isn’t true. Can we set that address some way?
Bug: the “manage” button for Google apps and mail doesn’t work: it links to http://www.google.com/a/cpanel/domain/new instead of http://www.google.com/a/cpanel/user.dreamhosters.com
January 12th, 2009 at 7:10 am

Ah, you guys finally found a use for Twitter. I gotz mine code!!! Personally I don’t need free hosting since I am very happy with my package and have many domains – it is worth it but I will test for you cause I LUVS ME SOME DH and I have a new client I’m trying to get to swap, she has no budget, will try free and tell her to upgrade for FTP acces and customer support.
Personally I have had responsive customer support over the years, maybe cause I can read and follow directions.
