See Dallas Talk

October 10, 2008 on 12:51 pm | In Business, Updates by Dallas Kashuba | 13 Comments

I have a couple of talks coming up at events that you might be interested in. The first one is at WorldBlu Live , coming up in New York City next week, Thursday and Friday October 16-17, 2008. In their words: WorldBlu LIVE is the only conference in the world that connects you to directly to the top leaders of organizations on the WorldBlu List of Most Democratic Workplaces™ as well as other thought-leaders and mavericks who will share their unique stories, best practices, and leadership strategies for building a world-class democratic workplace.

I’ll be speaking about how democracy is used within DreamHost and how it makes our business stronger. A bit of DreamHost history will be thrown in to provide some basis. I’m looking forward to this conference and I think there will be a lot of really cool talks from really interesting people. Some of the speakers that stood out to me are Tim Westergren, the founder of Pandora, and Philip Rosedale, the CEO of Linden Lab (the Second Life people). Those are two companies doing things on the Internet that will have a long-lasting impact, in one way or another.

The other talk is in Atlanta on November 12-14, 2008 and is at php|works, a PHP conference with a sister Python conference, PyWorks, running simultaneously. I’ll be talking about how to optimize web applications for the users of shared and VPS hosting services like DreamHost. It’s an hour long talk so help me out by showing up with LOTS of questions. There’s a lot of other good talks too, and I’ll be there the whole time.

Ah… Good luck with your speech Josh. If you get nervous use the good old trick of picturing everybody naked. =)

oh no, they said “maverick!” that’s practically become a dirty word in recent months.

  3. Anon Says:

@1: It’s Dallas not Josh talking, therefore “See Dallas Talk” ;) You know by the way the blog post is written that it couldn’t have been Josh writing!

  4. dwr Says:

Well shit… I’m about 70 miles into hillbilly territory from ATL, but am interested in the democracy talk rather than the php!

It would be awesome if you could have that one videod and post it so we can all enjoy… any chance of that?

  5. Baja Real Estate Says:

Doh…. Ok… my mistake… Dallas can still picture Josh naked if he wants.

  6. Nicholas Says:

Well it would’ve been nice to come check it out since I live right across the river… but registration closed the day you made that post. :(

  7. Nicholas Says:

(Clarification: that’s for WorldBlu Live in NYC.)

  8. Dallas Kashuba Says:

Sorry for the late post, Nicholas… whoops! I really shoulda posted it sooner, but I’ve been tied up with other things for a few weeks.

There will be video of all of the talks… the WorldBlu people are hoping for a lot of people watching it all!

AWESOME news… if they will make it embedable I would also like to post it on one of my sites. I think it is very interesting, this entire approach to business that you guys are pretty much creating from scratch.

Did any of you guys go to business school or any such thing? What exactly did you base your ways of business upon, other than The Golden Rule and an appreciation for freedom of expression and personal / group liberty? Or am I makin yall sound slightly more glorious than you are… !!! I don’t know, I’m just curious… like I say, I just find the entire “Dreamhost Phenomenon” to be very unique and interesting.

You know what I REALLY wish you guys would do? I would like to see a monthly (or wheneverly, I’ll take what I can git) Dreamhost Podcast, where yall just cover some of the thangs yall are doin, what all events yall have had, just talkin about philosophical thangs regarding business, web hosting, personal expression, all kinds of thangs. And also a segment called “Let’s Git To Know An Employee” er somethin, and just interview a different person there each episode.

Yall would git even MORE famous fer bein awesome, and it would cause yall to reap one sweet harvest of created account, I would just about bet my Grandmaw’s walker on it.

  10. dwr Says:

But also consider, that if you guys were REALLY cool, hip and with it and all, then I would not have had to tell you that, and you would have already been doin it. You will be very lucky if you do not git beat to the punch… I am seein LunarCast comin soon!!! Yall don’t be like we were when the Russians gite both an unmanned and manned orbitin object into space first!

    LunarCast
    GatorCast
    TempleCast

Whoever does it first will always be known as the pioneer of it! You better throw the first episode together QUICK, just so you can stake that claim! You KNOW they all read here! Hale, I aint never really looked at the LunarPages blawg, cause whenever I did I felt like I was, well, I’ll say that dried up come immediately to mind. What the hale would THEY even talk about in a podcast anyways… how they manage to somehow create a coolness vacuum (you know, complete absence of coolness) that’s so strong it sometimes trigger’s false positives in the SETI signals?

I thank, at some point, ALL of their suckiness will come alive like the goo under New York City in Ghostbusters 2, but if they beat yall to havin a podcast, then yall might as well just know that it would no longer even MATTER who is better on the basketball court.

Good Luck Dallas! Hey, about your history? I’d love to know how the hosting started? Was it in your own home like Google started out in? -Coal Miner

    @ dwr

I honestly like the suggestions you have made, but your folksy, intentional misspellings are distracting. I literally chose to stop reading half way through your second post.
