July 29, 2008 on 11:46 am | In Foobars, Funnyish, Insider View by Josh Jones | 28 CommentsWe just felt a BIG earthquake! Okay, just a 5.8, but it sure made our 50th story office BOUNCE!
Don’t worry, all data centers are okay!

Okay guys, keep cool!
July 29th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
Haha, the Brea Office is right next to the supposed epicenter (Chino Hills), and I’m right in between you two (Diamond Bar).

You can actually see a list of aftershocks in here:

Glad all is fine.

The earthquake must explain why mod_php on my Private Server still does not work. :(
July 29th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
Why is this blog post filed/categorized as “Funnyish”?
July 29th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
@Benny H – Because it was funny seeing our servers fall off the racks! ;-)
July 29th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
@Benny H: if you’d seen the reaction of everyone at the office after it stopped shaking, you’d have posted it in funnyish too. it was like everyone just got off of a rollercoaster.
July 29th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
Benny H try removing the hosting of the domain totally (without removing the domain it self), then re add it with mod_php set.
Worked for me.

Yeah, well, keep laughing, DH. Nervously. I’ll be watching the USGS Shakemaps website to see when your building won’t just be wobbling but walking across LA. Just make sure that I get a nice fat refund for all the offline months when you’ll be gathering up the pieces. Not being dark here, just realistic. Why don’t you guys move DH inland, like to Denver or Madison? Blog about your crisis backup plan for us…
July 30th, 2008 at 2:30 am
I think I should take a backup n save it on my laptop :P
July 30th, 2008 at 5:32 am
DH, have you guys signed up for the upcoming Southern Califrnia ShakeOut? http://www.shakeout.org It’s a week of preparedness events, featuring a massive earthquake drill at 10 AM on November 13. It plays out what DH might do during the ShakeOut Scenario, a hypothetical 7.8 m earthquake originating near the Salton Sea, which could devastate LA. My clients have all called me asking about DH preparedness, and I have have to answer that I don’t know. What’s the plan, Josh?
July 30th, 2008 at 8:54 am
Oh yay, now you can use this as an excuse for all your fuck-ups..
July 30th, 2008 at 8:57 am
Melanie, are you serious? They don’t even have contingencies for everyday problems, let alone natural disasters! If it’s uptime and service you’re looking for, boy did you come to the wrong host!
July 30th, 2008 at 11:31 am
What I am curious about is if Dreamhost fell into the ocean, how would we retrieve our domain registrations… especially those with private whois? I would not be worried about the hosting… it would be gone and I would have to reupload elsewhere, but domains are not moved so simply. It is awful to discuss such things, but these are issues that really do seem to need some addressing.
July 30th, 2008 at 11:47 am
I also want to know what the disaster recovery plans are. Have you ever considered opening a data center in Atlanta, gnax.net possibly? Let all the californian’s have there servers in CA and all us east coasters have them in Atlanta.
July 30th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
I’m glad to hear that everything is all right on your end! That’s a relief.
July 30th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
Glad to here your all okay! Great blog as usual…

@dwr: ICANN actually requires registrars to have offsite backups for reg data, for obvious reasons.
August 4th, 2008 at 11:36 am
Thank’s Jeremy, so what would we do, contact ICANN and they could get the backups and see that despite the private reg I am the owner and can then move my registrations to wherever I choose?
August 4th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
I think you’ll be ok even if Dreamhost fell into the ocean. I imagine they’re smart enough to back everything up off-site.
August 4th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
Thx JeremyK but exactly how does that happen? Steps? I have to plan ahead for my clients. If DH has that democratic management blogged about, then here’s my petition to democracy to LET US KNOW what your disaster plan is. That is, after step 1) get DH staff to safety…

“I imagine they’re smart enough to back everything up off-site.”
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! OMG I ALMOST FELL OFF MY CHAIR!!!

I am afraid that Melanie got a real significant point there. I have actually wondered several times about the location of the datacenters and a real smart move would be moving out of that area.
I made a joke about you guys moving to The Netherlands at some other blogpost, but I am really serious. One time or another the quakes will get you! Then you are in much more deep shit then with the “fat fingers” cock up.
I’ve been two times in an earthquake myself and although the sounds from the earth in the Himalayeas are the most beautiful I ever heard, I do not want to be in it anymore, neither do my websites.
Cheers, HansNL
