A Strike on Resolutions!
January 2, 2008 on 9:33 pm | In New Features, Rants by Josh Jones | 37 Comments
Okay, I’m not exactly sure what the current state of the writers strike is, so I’m just going to make this a Happy New Years post and be done with it.
Happy 2008!
There, got that out of the way!
And now, here are a few of my personal new years resolutions:
* Eat more chocolate.
* Exercise less.
* Start smoking.
* Start really drinking.
* Save less money.
* Spend less time with family.
* Read less books.
* Be more selfish.
* Get less organized.
and of course…
* Get the January DreamHost newsletter out by my birthday.
Now, please don’t get accustomed to this, but I thought I’d go ahead and end this shorty-short post with a NEW FEATURE RESOLUTION!
Well, a new BETA feature resolution at least. Please go and test out a new webmail client at roundcube.dreamhost.com … and comment about it in this discussion forum thread … and who knows, maybe before the end of this writer’s strike we’ll have replaced squirrelmail with it!

Ha. AS IF!

Um…how are we supposed to login?

Stripping out single quotes might be a good idea.

Awesome, that works quite well!

Very nice! How much?
January 3rd, 2008 at 1:10 am
‘Bout time! Now I don’t care if you get the newsletter out in time or not because I’ll be playing with RoundCube. Tons better than the squrrel. I look forward to having it show up at webmail.mydomain.com.

I absolutely LOVE this as an option. And hope it’s the direction Dreamhost will move.
So please don’t take me comments below as negative
Just a few observations
1) It’s craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy slow.
2) The login page need to make it more clear that your username is “yourname@yourdomain.com”. The “@” sign confused me at the end of the username input field.
3) I know this is beta so I hope (and assume) this aspect will change. It would be hugely perferred to be a subdomain of my own (e.g. mail.mydomain.com).
4) Ran on SSL.
Other than that, and continuly updating Roundcube as it reaches the stable 1.0 (since it’s not released yet) … I’ll be a VERY happy camper.
January 3rd, 2008 at 11:29 am
what about increasing the php5 memory? ;-)
January 3rd, 2008 at 11:33 am
@Tim – “4) Ran on SSL.”
If you can live with a DreamHost self-signed certificate, https://roundcube.dreamhost.com/ works! :-)
I’d miss not being able to import/export address books, mass manipulation of tagged items (move, etc), and “toggle tagged” … but it *is* “prettier” than the Squirrel.

I tried that and it does not work.

@rlparker
Whoops, maybe it’s an bug with Firefox 3. It seems to work in other browsers.

I really don’t understand all the Squirrelmail hate from within my own company. I mean, it’s… a squirrel. How can you not like squirrels?
Roundcube, by contrast, is… a round cube. There’s absolutely nothing lovable able that. It doesn’t even make geometric sense.
Then again, I use a real email client – none of that fickle web-based stuff (even Gmail!) unless I’m on the road. But that’s just me.

2008 Wish List
————-
I’m on a Private Server with not much RAM and would love it if I could run a low memory usage web server like NGINX or LiteSpeed.
The great thing about Private Server is just that – they are “private”. Memory is at a premium. So please let us run a low memory usage web server.
Thanks

RoundCube is awesome… Please switch!!

哇,中国的老鼠啊
January 4th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
It’s sexy, but double clicking on emails to read them is not. Single clicks plz!
January 4th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
Jeff,
I completely agree with you. Don’t get me wrong, I have RoundCube set up for my own domain and it’s great for a quick-look at my emails. Plus it supports HTML emails, so that’s always nice.
However, it IS slow AND buggy as a three-legged mutt living with hobos. If I need a webmail client to actually DO something on, I use Squirrelmail (or Gmail :-). I DON’T use RoundCube.
I know it’ll get better, it’s just not there yet is all…

It’s as slow as SquirrelMail, but nicer looking. :)
Why are they so damn slow, anyways? I just wish DreamHost would compile IMAP into PHP so we wouldn’t have to build on our own to run a better web-based client like DWMail.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
Good that you are expanding the choices in email client.
You guys should now work towards having a proper spam filtering system. =)
Brad.

I just have all my mail being brought in by Gmail (better spam detection, interface, much faster). Unless you can rival Gmail, doubt I will use it.
January 4th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Your web based mail service is the worst I have ever used/seen compared to any company. I constantly hear people defend you saying “If you need soemthing fast get a dedicated server” or my personal favorite “You are only paying 9.95 a month, why are you complaining”.
Fact is, your web based email sucks, plain and simple. I use Gmail instead for my domain and will till the day I die.
Google forever!

2008 Private Server Wish List
—————————-
- Low memory usage web server option (NGINX, LiteSpeed)
- PHP-APC is installed (http://pecl.php.net/package/APC)
- The ability to run wildcard SSL certificates
- Memcache installed
Note, what is listed above is software particularly useful for those of use on a Private Server.

@Chris – “I just wish DreamHost would compile IMAP into PHP so we wouldn’t have to build on our own to run a better web-based client like DWMail.”
Are you aware that on DreamHost you can compile, and use, your own instance of PHP, with IMAP, for your domains?
The DreamHost wiki tells you how it’s done:
http://wiki.dreamhost.com/Installing_PHP5 ;-)
January 5th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
@rlparker
Yep, done it. I just wish I didn’t have to, and knew why DreamHost doen’t include php-imap in their PHP build.
January 5th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
I also wish we couuld access the Junk Mail folder through IMAP. I hate having to login to SquirrelMail to access Junk Mail.

+1 for custome software on DreamhostPS
January 6th, 2008 at 7:03 am
Why not give @Mail a go guys? @Mail is an extremely well polished webmail client. We’ve a few installs supporting upwards of 100,000 users.

*gick*
Is it just me? I went to peek WebMail and got this:
IMAP Error: Could not connect to mail. at port 143:
No worries; I haven’t started using that ccount yet. But …
have a great ‘08!

p.s. I’m not real keen on rats so I’m saying 2008 is “Earth/Brown Mouse” … symbol of courage, ain’t that ironical? Story goes that mouse is brave cuz he’s gotta get right up close to know anything, to wiggle his whiskers on whatevuh to get a real feel for what’s what.

@ Paul Kelly – “Why not give @Mail a go guys? @Mail is an extremely well polished webmail client.”
That’s a pretty “pricey” package! I can see the costs for using that adding up to be a significant amount of money.
January 7th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
A note to you DreamHost PS people asking for additional software… You are able and encouraged to run whatever custom software you would like to use on your private server. We have a few users who have already switched their websites to use alternative http server software, in fact.
We will be adding additional features to the DreamHost PS platform, and some of those listed may be in the list, but as of right now you can already do just about all of what you have requested. What you are asking for is for us to do it all for you, and that’s a whole other ball of wax!

Just a FYI for everyone, roundcube is now available as a replacement for squirrelmail in the panel. Go to the Mail->Webmail section of the panel to enable it.
January 9th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
Please don’t switch Squirrelmail with Roundcube! Use both of them.
The reason is that RC doesn’t work very well behind proxy servers, like the one I am forced to suffer through at work. If you switch totally to RC, people like me won’t be able to read mail. And that’s kind of the point, isn’t it?

Don’t kill the Squirrel!
January 12th, 2008 at 5:56 am
Josh,
The RoundCube is “Cute”, but this does nothing to help us business sites that need REAL functionality such as Calendars, Tasks, Manageable Contacts, and Appointments, etc.
Please PLEASE, PLEASE get ZIMBRA, or Scalix!!!!!
Otherwise, you might as well keep Squirrel Mail…it’s FUGLY but basically functional…..who needs “CUTE” but AlSO BASICALLY FUNCTIONAL…..we NEED FULLY FUNCTIONAL.
Really Dreamhost, get with it. Right now I’m using Google Apps which helps but it’s still not what our non-profit really needs for collaboration purposes……

Once again: let Squirrel Mail stay. The only reason to drop this would be a highly functional system. RoundCube is NOT. So don’t waste your time please. Don’t listen to all those complainers who want this and that and that – they can use Gmail or whatever mailstuff there is. Cheers.
