We Keep it Moving
October 4, 2007 on 1:02 pm | In Insider View by Josh Jones | 41 CommentsTurning 10 wasn’t the only thing we did last week. We also moved offices.
Well, we didn’t exactly move… we were evicted! And our new office space isn’t even ready yet! So really we just ended office.
Just a little bit too much bringing alcohol into the building, playing pool, neighbor complaints about loud profanities, and one too many bomb threats I guess.
The situation is all very complicated, and came about pretty suddenly, but fortunately we were able to get a REAL LIVE MOVING PIRATE from “Starving Students.” (Starving Students is an equal-opportunity employer and will hire any qualified applicant. Any.)
Things happened so fast, we ended up just trash compacting about 200 old 36GB fiber channel hard drives that had (private) customer data on them we couldn’t let get into enemy hands…
… as well as moving a bunch of leftover drinks down to the NOC our temporary office space for at least a month.
Before.
After.
(Exactly how it looked when we originally moved in!)

Hmm, I can’t really tell the difference between the before and after shots. Is the “After” slightly cleaner?

Y’arr, we be movin’ yer office, matey.
All I could think was, “We were evicted from OUR hole in the ground, we had to go and live in a lake!”
“Oh, you were lucky to have a lake! We were a hundred and fifty of us living in a shoebox in the middle of the road!”
“Cardboard box?”
“Aye.”
“You were lucky!”

I’ll have you all know that those of us in the Orange County office are much, much cleaner than those slobs in downtown LA.

Dude! I seriously hope it’s just me not getting the joke.
It really isn’t that good PR when you publish about your own eviction on your blog. Especially when it’s about unprofessional conduct. I know you guys like to have fun, which is important, but… Ah well…
As I said, I hope it’s just me that ain’t getting the joke :D

“It really isn’t that good PR when you publish about your own eviction on your blog. Especially when it’s about unprofessional conduct.”
I find the word “professional” to be repulsive myself… to me professional = not being able to be yourself. Congrats to DH for being able to create an oasis of freedom within a world dominated by “professionals”.
Their lack of pretension is refreshing, even when it IS just a wee little bit scary… and I’m sure that the mold/fungal/funk/spooge experiments won’t leak down from their office into our websites!

Yeah, doesn’t it suck having to put up with Dreamhost’s open and honest behavior?
Why can’t they be more like the 15 year olds with reseller accounts in their mommies’ names that try to pass themselves off as Rolex-wearing, Bentley-driving, datacenter-owning businessmen? And maybe grab a few guy-in-suit pics for the homepage from a free clip-art site?

[...] How are you supposed to feel when your hosting company gets evicted from their office space? [...]
October 5th, 2007 at 6:40 am
I feel quite safe with my websites in Dreamhosts hands. As long as i get the uptime I’ve been having i cant see myself moving any time soon.
I worked in an office where we used to ride a bmx round, play with remote control toy helicopters and have a general laugh. The productivity from that office was greater than any other work environment I’ve been in. Happy staff work harder and are more willing to put extra time and effort into things to help improve the company.

DreamHost Evicted From LA Offices…
Shared hosting provider DreamHost says it has been evicted from its Los Angeles offices….
October 5th, 2007 at 7:49 am
We didn’t get evicted as far as I know… The lease just expired, that’s all!
October 5th, 2007 at 9:34 am
Yeah. The lease expired and the building ‘opted’ to not renew. But seriously, if you could see the list of things in that contract that could get a tenant evicted, you’d be surprised if a flower shop could get their contract renewed in there.

I would love it if Dreamhost followed this up with a post explaining things in a slightly more adult fashion.
I would especially like to know what they did with those drives after the compacted them. That doesn’t make me feel secure.
Come on DH, with great power comes great responsibility.

Jay Says:
“I would love it if Dreamhost followed this up with a post explaining things in a slightly more adult fashion.”
Jay, there are some of us who are trying our best to avoid adult fashions, as we believe that adult fashions are largely responsible for the bulk of this world’s misery. Adult fashionism is a very slippery slope… I would suggest strong cautions against requesting, promoting or participating in adult fashions.

We did not get evicted, our lease expired. Sensationalism at it’s worst!
October 5th, 2007 at 10:30 pm
Hahaha, excellent. I love seeing all the self important egotists around the web chiding Dreamhost for not spinning this into some “We’ve opted to relocate to different offices so that we can better serve out customers!” crap.
The lease ended. New offices, weren’t ready, the old building probably declined DH’s request to stay an extra month, so DH is moving into Josh’s basement for a month.
If all you people think they left that office in bad shape, at least it’s CLEAN and messy rather than FILTHY and messy. I’ve seen “professional” corporations leave behind horrid messes when the leave. So DH left some old monitors, packing peanuts, and an old cough in plastic wrap ready for the dumpster. At least there’s no rat droppings, dog feces, or large patches of mold on the walls.

“an old couch”
That’s “nasty old SPOOGE couch”… hover over the image! I won’t even let The Lord read this blog post for fear of Him seeing THAT!
October 6th, 2007 at 7:14 am
Heh,heh. I’m impressed!
Back in the early 1970s I worked for a small consulting firm. There were about 25 of us assigned to work at a BigOldBank in NYC. Every other week on Wednesday we’d go to lunch as a group and not go back to the client’s offices after.
By time I left the company there were two fairly well known restaurants that had “invited us not to come back”. We took that as a badge of honor.
OK, vaguely related, but I know how you feel. Congratulations on being sufficiently eccentric to get yourselves kicked out of your quarters. Merit badges all around.

there ain’t no such thing as Alt Tags
October 6th, 2007 at 7:30 pm
“there ain’t no such thing as Alt Tags”
Maybe not in official technical specs, but in practice there certainly are. For instance, it is said that alt attributes are not intended to produce pop up text when hovering over an image. Not intended by whom? The people who created the specs, or the people who created the content? Josh, as the creator of this content obviously intended the text to be read and enjoyed, therefore in this context they are alt tags. Thanks for playin though!
October 7th, 2007 at 6:56 pm
“there ain’t no such thing as Alt Tags”
Sheesh. Now you’ve made me “View Source”.
There are alt attributes and title attributes. The former makes popups in stupid browsers (i.e. IE) and the latter makes popups in real browsers (such as Firefox). The Dreamhost blog uses both and sets them equal. Darn those Dreamhost people are clever!

At least you got a notification for the eviction. Apparently, you don’t do the same courtesy to your customers.

MrSuave, let me put this in a way you’ll understand…
Waaaaaaa waaaaaaaaaa waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
October 7th, 2007 at 11:12 pm
MrSuave, you too were given notification… on August 30th you were told that if you violated the TOS one MORE time (after multiple previous violations) that your account would be closed. Common sense should have told you that it would not be ok to host pirated DVDs. The Lord has smoted thine ass… it is now time to be honest with yourself and the rest of the world, and to rethink your way of being rather than trying to lash out at others for your own trespasses.
October 8th, 2007 at 2:55 pm
> Common sense should have told you that it would not be ok
> to host pirated DVDs.
Yes. In case there was any question, we’re definitely not cool with that.
> The Lord has smoted thine ass…
Not sure if I can live up to deity status, but I appreciate the sentiment, anyhow. :)
- Jeff @ DreamHost, smoter of (warez-kiddie) asses…
October 8th, 2007 at 8:08 pm
Jeff, I’m not normally one to go around correcting things like this, but just in case you are thinking of making a cool sign for you office door or desk (when you get a new office, of course), it should be Smiter Of Asses! Smote would be the past tense of smite, in The Lord terminology.
October 9th, 2007 at 11:02 am
> it should be Smiter Of Asses! Smote would be the past tense
> of smite, in The Lord terminology.
Let’s just say that I like to let my past deeds speak for me.

I’m bettin there will ALWAYS be asses in need of a good smiting!
October 9th, 2007 at 3:23 pm
Jay, I’m sure they didn’t trash compact their hard drives and fiber cables. Responsible environmentally friendly, green companies, such as DreamHost do not dispose of computer equipment in such an irresponsible manner.
