Just The Facts

I’m bored, so for punishment this is going to be a very boring, and serious, and factual blog post.
We’ve now got DreamHost PS MySQL.
Eat THAT, commenters.
DreamHost PS MySQL is completely separate from regular DreamHost PS.
That means:
You can get it without DreamHost PS. Get it if you just want isolated/protected/guaranteed MySQL resources for your databases. ALL your MySQL dbs on your account are moved to your very own MySQL instance inside a Linux-VServer virtual private server on dedicated database hardware. The dedicated database hardware means local, raided, high-performance SAS disks, the same stuff we use for our shared DB servers. The pricing is the same as for regular DreamHost PS: $1/month per 10MB of RAM. If you get both DreamHost PS and DreamHost PS MySQL, you’ll get 20% off your monthly fee for both services.
(Okay, those didn’t really follow from the lead-in sentence, but nevertheless, them’s the things you needs to know.)
Once again, DreamHost PS MySQL is invitation only. But, you can get on the wait list at the same place as before: our panel, doi.
These are the facts as we understand them to be.

This is excellent! I already subscribed to the MySQL too.
Is there any idea how long is this “few weeks” we have to wait in the waitlist?

This sounds really good. Can you provide some guidance as to when someone would actually need a PS instance? A certain number ‘conueries’ or DB traffic?
September 5th, 2007 at 9:51 am
@Alex: If your database has been causing problems for other customers, and you’re unable to optimize your SQL usage sufficiently, a MySQL PS would be a good solution.
That’s just one idea, I’m sure we can think up others.

So, we basically need to pay ~$40 per month at Dreamhost to get the same performance we get from, say, MediaTemple for $20 per month.
Or are these products REALLY worth the money?

[...] Introducing DreamHost PS MySQL, they say that all MySQL databased on your account can be moved to your very own MySQL instance inside a Linux-VServer virtual private server on dedicated database hardware (means local, raided, high-performance SAS disks, used for shared DB servers). Now you can pay to upgrade your site to private server services and test new traffic bursts with exceptional performance uptime and avoid server crashes. [...]

If I’m on a shared server and I opt to go for a PS, would I be restricting myself to less cpu, ram, or mysql than I might actually already have access to now?
September 5th, 2007 at 11:16 am
Hey Hobbes..
I think you’re comparing to the wrong things at media temple?
http://www.mediatemple.net/webhosting/dv/ is what our DreamHost PS is like.. and it’s $50/mo at MT.
http://www.mediatemple.net/webhosting/gs/mysql-containers.htm is what our DreamHost PS MySQL is like, and they’re more expensive there too.
Hey Bruja,
Yes, there is a chance for that. With shared you’re in the city swimming pool with a lot of other people. Most of the time you’re fine, and you have a nice big pool to swim around in.. but every once in a while, somebody pees in the pool and ruins it for everybody.
DreamHost PS is like a private pool at your house, maybe not as big as the community pool, but nice and clean and no weirdos messing it up.. and you can always pay more to get a private pool as big as the public pool if you really want it!

Will we be able to set system variables using PS?

2 Questions.
1) Do you have any idea how long till those of us “waiting” for Dreamhost PS will be given our invites?
2) Is is possible to move sites over one at a time to make sure that there are no unforeseen errors?
Thanks!

Private MySQL Servers…
When DreamHost launched Private Servers a month ago, the biggest complaint was that MySQL would still be a bottleneck, since it would continue to be run on shared servers.
Now DreamHost introduces DreamHost PS MySQL.
Now, you can get exactly the same …

How about yous guys work on the FilesForever idea? Maybe make the FF website NOT look like it was designed in 1995 and just a tad more reassuring for any potential customers. Not a peep or an update in a year… is it dead?

Josh,
Your newsletters are awesome. They are the only company newsletter I actually read.
Sincerely,

Now, if only you would allow for mysql replication with this service…

Josh Said:

Josh, it doesn’t really RUIN it for everybody… just those with weak constitutions… the rest of us just put our faith in the chlorine!

Course, I go swimmin in backwoods springs and creeks and avoid that altogether.

wow – cool from DH to erase negative posts
September 7th, 2007 at 3:26 pm
Ok boring post (if you don’t want PS) but cool photo!

How much RAM should I use for a Private Server MySQL?
September 7th, 2007 at 10:08 pm
I forgot to ask, is it possible to store my web files on the LOCAL disk of a Private Server webserver … since NFS is a little slower than local disk.
September 8th, 2007 at 12:48 am
MediaTemple is unreliable shite.
September 8th, 2007 at 12:52 pm
There is no way that can be considered a boring post – did you SEE that “Dreamhost P.S.” roll-over image? My God…
Jones, you’ve done it again!
September 9th, 2007 at 8:51 am
I second the vote to allow use of the local disk for Privater web Servers.
September 9th, 2007 at 10:04 pm
+1 for local disk access to store our web files on a DreamhostPS.
I absolutely love the PS idea. It *would* become perfect if we could store some web docs locally, say … nothing more than 50-100MB.
Then letting use run NGINX or LIGHTTPD instead of Apache to serve our files crazy fast from local disk. Now that would be perfect!
Local disk > NFS on speed
NGINX/LIGHTTPD > Apache on speed
Whooo baby, I’m just getting excited at the idea of that.

LOL, I actually read to the end of your newsletter. I found it hilarious. I must have been so bored out of my mind! ROFL
September 10th, 2007 at 5:45 pm
Do you guys know whether or not we can leave PS if, for example, we decide we want and find that it’s seriously impeding our websites? I.e., we’ve increased the vCPU and vMEM and we still aren’t satisfied and are currently paying forty bucks more than what we were paying in the community pool? Can we go back to our normal plans?
September 10th, 2007 at 7:24 pm
+ 1
I also favor local disk storage for PS. Now it’s understandable that everyone can’t have their GB of storage on local disk b/c that is not feasible.
But it would be awesome if we could store something like a few MB of important web documents (e.g. /index.html etc..) on the local disk for fast access of important web pages.

+1 for local disk storage on DreamhostPS

What’s the waiting listing timeframe for someone who signs up for a PS today?

+2 for local disk access for storing HTML/CSS/JS files on a private server (PS).

So…
I have some website on a dreamhost account for one year and a half now.
It sucks. Hard. Really…
I have never seen such an aweful host as dreamhost in my entire carreer.
Now… To get decent performance (ie. not waiting 30 seconds per page load), I would have to pay 5 times what I normally pay ?
Nevermind, I’m going to another host, you just pissed me off.

Would a dreamhostps mysql account/option providing a private mysql instance mean I could get access to the transaction log files and be able to process them through mysqlbinlog?
I *think* I’m right that it’s something I couldn’t do currently with a non-PS account (though not technically impossible, I just couldn’t find anything in the support wiki about it so I think it is unavailable), and would be a real selling point to me to have access to point-in-time restore recovery.
MySQL’s transaction log ‘visibility’ (/editability) is one of the things I like best about it and gives me some peace of mind against a rogue hacker hitting my site in the middle of the night and destroying enough to force a rollback to my last backup.
Thanks.

I don’t get the post #37. Its called comedy, satire if you’re referring to the Jsut the facts quote.
