Register Flight

March 19, 2007 on 4:19 pm | In Promotions, Tech News by Josh Jones |

RegisterFly is not run by actual flies.

I don’t know if you’ve heard about the problems over at RegisterFly?

They’re an ICANN-accredited registrar with like 900,000 domains, and because of some combination of escorts and liposuction they’ve been missing registry payments, not allowing people to move domains, and perpetrating countless other SHENANIGANS!

Anyway, ICANN finally said enough is enough, and announced they will be de-accredited on March 31st!

DreamHost is circling!

And now, the vultures are circling!

On a completely unrelated note…

If you’ve got a domain registered with RegisterFly now, you can transfer it to us, and get a year of our CDI hosting plan absolutely free!

Just use the promo code FLYAWAY when signing up!

(Be sure to enter your RegisterFly-registered domain on the form too!)

RegisterFly is one big mess right now. Customers are being abandoned without their domains, and they can’t transfer it or renew it!

Figures out why recently there have been quite a few domains that are conspicuously missing these months.

And to think, I used to be with those guys. Good thing I decided to move away from them about 7+ months ago. While I have hosting here, I don’t have my domain here because of some thing I have in my mind. That, and my domain was set to expire in like ‘08 because of that transfer as a result. :P

Now someone else I know has their domain registered with another webhosting company, and because of their lack of support, the domain can’t be transferred over here (though it was a miracle that they at least change the nameservers!)

    SHENANIGANS!

    I just love that word.

Glad I’m not hosted over there though, that really sucks. Not that I have any thousand dollar domain names or anything mind you…

My domain is registered at RF but when I try to sign up at DH and use the “FLYAWAY” promo code, I’m getting an error: “Promo code only valid for RegisterFly refugees!”. What’s the problem?

    Disastro Registerfly.com…

Ebbene si, eccomi qui. Anch’io ho qualche dominio registrato su Registerfly.com. Secondo quanto riportato in giro, uno dei soci, tale Kevin Medina, si è dato alla pazza gioia con i soldi della società.
Quindi servizi escort, conti della carta …

    Hi,

I can not imagine if my registrar is having the same problem. It makes me think not to register too many domain with one registrar in case the same thing happens.

I am glad the Dreamhost is offering generous deal to rescue registerfly customer.

    regards

That hardly seems fair to the rest of us. Yeah, yeah, I know I shouldn’t gripe, etc… but to be honest, I’d be more than willing to move my domains from GoDaddy to DreamHost for free time, or plan upgrades or bonuses. *shrug* And no, I’m not so naive as to think DH would offer a year per domain switched for non RF holders. *shrug* but, say, five, or eight, or ten domains for a year?

(yeah, I know, I’m lame.. but you try being in such financial disrepair that you’re worrying about how you’re going to be able to pay your hosting bill, due in June, in March. *shrug*)

I have a problem. I have hosting with DH, but I have my domain with RegisterFly. What do I do? Since I am not a new customer, but I am still a RegisterFlyRefugee! :(

I’m in the same boat as Ravi there. I already have a DreamHost account with multiple domains in it. I have been able to salvage two of my domain names from Registerfly, but I still have about seventeen others with them that I cannot afford to transfer out.

It seems like it would be cheaper for DreamHost and still helpful to the users if they still gave free Regfly transfers to already existing members to put on their existing accounts.

No offense, but allowing only new customers to use the FLYAWAY promo seems more like a future investment for DreamHost rather than a knight in shining armor coming to save the RegFly customers. Why save some and leave the others to rot, especially when they’ve already invested time and money into DreamHost?

Why not just remove DH’s hosting briefly, and then use the flyaway promo?

    Comment by Robb — March 31, 2007 #

  23. 23

One DH support membered said this to me:

“Keep in mind that the FLYAWAY promotion is for new customers only and only offers 1 free registration transfer, if you sign up for additional accounts using the FLYAWAY promo code, your account(s) will most likely be suspended.”

I am already hosted by DH and love their service…I am not a computer expert but felt like a pro with their help setting up my hosting.

The problem I have is I have paid for 2 hosting packages with regfly and my domain name renewal and the bastard took my money… I just wish someone would post their address… so I could go collect my money back from them.

If you are thinking of switching to DH I can tell you stop thinking and switch today!

What is the procedure to get the “Authentication Code” from the RegisterFly.com?

I have many domains stuck there and my transfer requests to DH are failing due to “incorrect auth code”.

Now when the support is non-existent on RegisterFLy.com and no web links on their website to obtain an auth code, how does one go about obtaining it? Thanks in advance..

Thought this might be useful for an existing Registerfly.com user to obtain the Authorization code for their domains. There is a working link on registerfly.com website which details the steps to obtain the authorization code: https://registerfly.com/kb/?mode=detail&detailid=452213&id=2000&articleid=452212

As of today they are still claiming to be an ICANN-accredited registrar. See this page:

I just wanted to let you folks know that here’s a site that has been monitoring the RegisterFly debacle, http://www.registerflies.com and they are reporting ICANN is about to announce some sort of agreement to allow folks who lost access to their domains to be able to access them again and move them away to responsible registrars.

In the end, this goes to show that ICANN has been a paper tiger for all too long, but I hope this serves as a gigantic wake-up call for the industry to get its act together.

Here’s another article on the subject that I wrote on my DreamHosted site the other day:
