We’ve been burgled!
January 25, 2007 on 12:05 pm | In Updates by Brett |Last night DreamHost’s Brea office was burglarized.
Someone gained access to our building, broke into our locked office, and stole a critical piece of hardware.
Our neon sign.

This one-of-a-kind artwork was commissioned for our 2006 Christmas party and had been proudly hanging on the wall of our office in Brea ever since. Until today.
The thieves left this sign in its place.

What confuses us most is that the thieves didn’t steal any computers. Those 20 inch LCD displays? They’re still there. Dell and Mac desktops? Check. Foosball table and arcade machine? They were all unmoved and seemingly untouched.
We have no idea who could have done this. Our building and our office are locked up tight after hours. We had people working here until the wee hours of the morning and nobody saw anything! We’re stumped and the Brea police department has never seen anything like it.
Sure, there’s plenty of people out there who want to blow us up and some who even want to kick our f$ckin’ a$$es. But who would break into our office just to steal a neon sign?
It is a mystery.
If you happen to come across our sign, we’d like to know about it! We don’t have any leads to go on, and that sign holds great sentimental value to our employees. Please contact us if you see or hear anything!

Lol why does it have aerials??
January 25th, 2007 at 12:23 pm
Could it possibly be some kind of inside joke?
I don’t see how a thief would risk getting caught for a neon sign, whatever its value is to you guys.
January 25th, 2007 at 12:25 pm
Probably being sold for scrap metal. Could it be a prank inhouse? Come on, Josh was really interested in it. ;-)
Is there a free webhosting reward?
January 25th, 2007 at 12:26 pm
@james: they aren’t aerials… it appears to be the wires holding it from the suspended ceiling tiles.
whoever stole this sign MUST PAY!
January 25th, 2007 at 12:30 pm
ok, so maybe I spoke too soon, they do look like aerials :P
January 25th, 2007 at 12:34 pm
They’re not antennas.
The sign hangs from the wall on two chains.
Those chains are hooked on to the screws for the stolen sign :(
January 25th, 2007 at 12:36 pm
It’s for sale on Ebay.
January 25th, 2007 at 12:41 pm
ex-employees or current employees — i bet its a joke
January 25th, 2007 at 12:42 pm
I don’t see it on eBay.
What are the odds that this is an employee playing a prank? You mentioned the police, so I suppose if this is a prank, it’s not going to end well…
January 25th, 2007 at 12:48 pm
mourns the lost sign.
*dies a little inside*
January 25th, 2007 at 1:01 pm
You’ll probably get a cut-n-pasted note with a ransom demand and a picture of the sign’s plug next to a pail of water. I think you should get the sign’s pic and stats on milk cartons before it’s too late.
It’s not on ebay. If it’s not an inside job, then you really need to figure out how they got in! You have a whole slew of web savy investigators already on the job.
Let’s go get em and get that sign back!
January 25th, 2007 at 1:15 pm
Maybe another web host stole it like how we steal the other teams mascot….
January 25th, 2007 at 1:19 pm
Isn’t there some sort of security system in your building? At least a computer with a web cam hooked up to it? Not even a microphone recording everything said in the office? And you guys call your selves techies!?
January 25th, 2007 at 1:27 pm
Wah! The DH sign was cool, the replacement one is insulting. :(

You know the bell from the old Taco Bell on Brea Blvd., across from the City Hall Park? I think it’s next to the bell somewhere.
Go to that place, and nearby at the dairy just across the street and South a little, keep an eye on the cow. That cow leaves every now and then to go hang out with the bell; so the cow might very well lead you to your sign as a result.
Besides all of that, the cow is like a buddah, for real.

I’m envisioning a large manila envelope, delivered to a building in Brea.
Inside: a single photograph.
Picture this:
A lonely, unlit sign sits propped against a palm tree. In the background: Dolphin Stadium.
Dreamhost goze 2 teh s00p3r b0w1!!!
January 25th, 2007 at 3:43 pm

thieving
bastards
January 25th, 2007 at 4:10 pm
You guys should setup a donation fund to have a replacement made.
January 25th, 2007 at 5:17 pm
hahahahahahahahah, I just can’t stop laughing. Who steals a sign and then replaces it with another?
- play a joke
- revenge
These are the two most probable reasons becuase a thief would have stolen everything else and definantly would not have put up a replacement sign.
hahahahahahahahahah-hahahahahahahahahaha…
January 25th, 2007 at 11:20 pm
We don’t have any leads to go on
Hahahahaha.
Sorry - shouldn’t laugh at your pain!
January 26th, 2007 at 12:09 am

January 26th, 2007 at 5:53 am
You guys thought of looking for a company named “Computer Services”?
January 26th, 2007 at 6:22 am
If you look really closely, you can just make out the neon sign in this picture.
January 26th, 2007 at 9:42 pm
WoW!
Yer lucky they didn’t steal those stylin’ ceiling tiles!
Sayyyyyy….by any chance, was that sign made of::::::::CHOCOLATE::::::::???????
If so, has anyone been acting extra mellow lately?
January 27th, 2007 at 7:28 am
I feel your pain.
I’m laughing so hard my belly aches.

hey crazy guy why didnt you steal a server since you it entered in a office full of them? I can see that you didnt go to school writing so dumb like you are.
January 29th, 2007 at 10:28 am
because normal people always use slashes to write a ‘w’… and i will now use my 1337 translation skills…
etectrixal? because that makes sense…
January 30th, 2007 at 10:09 am
looks like a dis’ to me
January 30th, 2007 at 12:19 pm
MmmmMmmmM I smell Netfirms…. or is it Bravehost….
January 30th, 2007 at 2:24 pm
obviously this is prank from DH to us… I doubt this is for real. in any case, if this IS for real, and, as said, there are tons of servers in the office or at least some open sessions to machines or pgp key signed ssh sessions ready to be used, the entire DH network should now be considered unsafe now. As far as we know, they could dump sql databases, .php clear text passwords, tweak scripts and payments, accounts, instal backdoors, new kernels :D … format, restore everything guys!
So, now, or you admit this is a joke, or you have to format all your servers and restore… actually, the backups themselves may have been tampered with… twilight zone ta na na na .. ta na na na
January 31st, 2007 at 1:22 pm
they didnt take the comps because they installed keyloggers on them to steal passwords.
all dreamhost members should get an extra year membership free :)

A hah! I have used my 1337-ness to translate the ransom;
Leave a dedicated Server with 4Gig of Ram and a {TB HD} Behind the men’s room toilet in the lobby, or you will neversee the Sign again-exclamation marks- We have enclosed the Cut-off electrical cord to show that we are serious-wavey- o do not attempt to contact the FBI or the Free Warex Fondation!-laugh out loud-
but what could it mean?
Dun dun dun!
