I must come from the same breed as Josh. He was just pointing out an interesting hack vs promoting a scam. He makes the proper acknowledgments to sites like slickdeals and fatwallet.

I'm surprised there have been people that have scammed Dreamhost. In the year or so that I've been using their service, they seem to be very honest in their business practices, awesome at expanding their offerings and the customer service has been responsive. Scamming Dreamhost would be like scamming your grandma.

This doesn't make me question my trust in Dreamhost at all.

This was simply a very amusing post, not an encouragement to become a scam artist.

I have to agree with Andre. I've been a reasonably happy dreamhost customer for a few years now. But since I read this post I find myself questioning whether I can trust a CEO of a large company that promotes taking advantage of loopholes. How do I know that he will not change the agreement and charge another $X/mo for something absurd, like a binary duality fee. It only costs the customers $X, but on a large scale across all Dreamhost customers that would be a massive "win" for the Josh Jones Yacht Fund. I mean, I'm sure the EULA that I was required to click to sign up said that terms may change at any time. So it would not be ILLEGAL to do such a thing. Much like it is not illegal to abuse the understanding that you have with your bank about ATM fees. In no way does something being technically legal, make it ethical.

By promoting the abuse of a loophole, you are strongly encouraging the bank to stop offering the benefit.

By promoting the abuse of the intent of agreements between customers and vendors (Banks, Hosting companies, etc.) you are strongly encouraging me to question my trust in Dreamhost as a company.

[...] I’ve perused their blog and came across this gem of a post in it. Remember that shopping cart hack I talked about earlier? Apparently, there are more bugs out there where that came from just waiting to turn us into wannabe scammers who can’t resist trying out some of these novel ideas. The post is about the possible ways consumers can scam establishments and companies for measly bucks: of course, I’m assuming you know better than to try any of these tricks! The amusement I got from it more than made up for the inconveniences we suffered throughout our transient power outage. [...]

Morality enters into everything, and there's a distinct difference between benefiting from a promotion and taking advantage of it. Don't be such dick.
