I’m sure everybody heard a while ago about that hot Goo-Tube action that got everybody all excited.
Google bought YouTube back on October 19th (I think it was) for 1.65BBBBBBBBBBBBillion in stock. Immediately after the announcement, Google’s stock went from $420.23 to $458.99… implying the total value of Google went from about $128BBBBBBBBBBBBillion to $140BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBillion!
So, essentially Google said to YouTube, “Yo, Tubey, let’s hit it,” and the world decided they were BOTH worth more money for it. Heck, even the RUMORS Google was going to get with YouTube put their stock up more than $1.65BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBillion worth of market cap. Sigh.
Since then, Google’s gone to $487.25, putting their market cap at $149BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBillion and the value of the YouTube portion of Google at $1.9BBBBBBBBBilllion. And for what? YouTube is basically a pared-down free web host that can only show video. P-SHAW!

WE are a FULL-Featured PAY web host, that can show video, images, audio, flash, send email, instant messages, store databases, run applications, store files forever, and even update a blog about as often as we send a newsletter!
Of course, YouTube has about a thousand times the “customers” we have.
Of course, I’d say each one of you PAYING guys has gotta be worth at least 100 times some anonymous YouTuber, right? So, we’ve gotta be worth at least $190 Million in Google stock, right? Maybe not.. I was never a very good business man.
In fact, I bet just by posting this, I could start some rumors a la “Google in talks to buy DreamHost for $190,000,000.” Then, if based on those rumors Google stock went up just sixty-six cents, my rumors alone would have more than paid for itself. In a way, Google would be obligated to buy us! And when they did, I bet their stock would go up at least another 33 cents, meaning they just made a 50% profit! They’d be a bunch of Yahoo!s not to snatch us up!
Now remember, I’m not saying Google’s in talks to buy us. Far from it. I don’t even know anybody at Google. I don’t even know anybody who knows anybody at Google. I don’t even know anybody who uses Google. I don’t even know what this “Google” is.
And we’re perfectly content with what we are now, nice and independent and small(ish).
But, if sometime later today Google’s stock were to, say, hit $487.91 a share, I’ll be expecting a call.

P.S. Just in case that call comes, we’re all set with some awesome new Google-esque features!
#1: I just filmed this UNBELIEVABLE video of a crazy raccoon out in front of my place last night! I want to share it with you all, but I don’t trust no YouTube with my ultra high-quality HD videos! That’s why I’m using the all new https://media.dreamhost.com/ flash media tools we just released!
Wasn’t that great? Way better than 98% of the stuff on YouTube!
#2: When the inevitable merger takes place, how are we going to make all our customers suffer? Oops, I mean pay? Google Checkout of course! Good thing we already accept Google Checkout now as yet another way to give us your money!

Test it out today.. go buy some more hosting!
#3: We started trying out Google Adsense on DreamBook (you know, our free Guestbook server, circa 1996), and it is reallllllly raking in the bucks! When the day comes that we are Dreamgle, Google will be able to keep the ENTIRE hundred bucks a day in ad revenues for themselves, instead of splitting it with us!

#4 Finally, don’t forget everybody using Google Talk can already talk with everybody using Jabber on DreamHost. Such forward-looking management we have!

December 5th, 2006 at 12:22 pm
You put quotation marks at the end of the URLs in the “Google Checkout” and “DreamBook” links, so they don’t work. :P
December 5th, 2006 at 12:26 pm
Interestingly enough, on my RSS reader, instead of the video it said “Invalid URL”, which actually made the following line even more hilarious to me than the actual video.
December 5th, 2006 at 12:32 pm
Josh, I have to say, you make possibly some of the funniest blog posts ever.
Grats on the new tools too.
December 5th, 2006 at 12:48 pm
They’re so going to buy you guys. Woohoo!
Google to Buy Dreamhost in Shocking YouTube Copycat Purchase Can you digg it?
December 5th, 2006 at 1:21 pm
Old news ;-)
The new media.dreamhost.com was announced two days ago at the Unofficial DreamHost Blog…
December 5th, 2006 at 2:54 pm
thank you josh, it’s a pleasure to read your posts, as usual.
December 5th, 2006 at 3:14 pm
Is there something wrong with my computer that when I play the flash video, I hear what sounds like someone screaming repeatedly?
December 5th, 2006 at 4:08 pm
Is the sound on the flash video supposed to sound like heavy breathing and nothing else?
December 5th, 2006 at 4:40 pm
If you saw a raccoon that hawt you’d be breathing heavy too.
December 5th, 2006 at 4:41 pm
If I owned that stock I wold sell it right now. You know it will go down again, and up again, the question is what will it be in 10 years? I would sell :) The internet is a strange, everchanging beast.
December 5th, 2006 at 5:38 pm
You guys should buy Google. I have a feeling they’re going to be the next big thing!
December 5th, 2006 at 5:55 pm
If the letters from my bank were as insane as the letters from my web host (DH) there would be less hate. Mmm… less hate.
So tell me, how long are you sleeping on the couch for after calling your wife a raccoon?
December 5th, 2006 at 6:00 pm
ummm… I am not kidding. On my computer the audio of that flash video sounds like this. On my other mac it sounds fine. Hmm… strange.
Oh well, just thought I would point it out :\
December 5th, 2006 at 6:01 pm
The Flash video isn’t showing up on my FreeBSD/KDE system. Flash is always so hit-or-miss on this thing… I wonder why.
December 5th, 2006 at 6:14 pm
You think that video is amazing? You should see my raccoon pictures and read my raccoon stories. We used to have ‘em in our bedroom, almost every night!
Oh, and – dugg! I love DH!
December 5th, 2006 at 6:25 pm
Josh, your blogs are funny as shat!
My name is Josh Jones, too. I recall about 3 or 4 years ago I emailed you drunk thinking that was the best coincidence in the world and a lady/girl responded back. I asked her for joshjones.org for free and you all hooked me up! I was a broke college kid at the time and haven’t forgotten. I’ve been seeing dreamhost all over the last little bit, so congratulations on building a successful company!

December 5th, 2006 at 6:36 pm
If Google bought Dreamhost, I would quit within 10 minutes. I don’t want Google doing any of their big-brother kung fu shit on my data.
December 5th, 2006 at 6:38 pm
haha, Dugg – Let’s watch the rumor fly!
December 5th, 2006 at 6:42 pm
I am afraid I agree with the Anon Coward above – I would find another hosting co in a sec. I don’t want Google looking through my data…
December 5th, 2006 at 6:43 pm
Matt Nordhoff is a poopie head! ;) (Hey Peng!)
This is entirely relevant to this blog post.
December 5th, 2006 at 6:46 pm
What? I heard that Dreamhost was buying Google!
December 5th, 2006 at 7:03 pm
You sooo don’t want those raccoons anywhere near your house dude. They’re cute but they’ll go ya big-time. Worse than kangaroos…
December 5th, 2006 at 7:14 pm
Hehe, shush Grey. :P
December 5th, 2006 at 7:44 pm
Winner of Best Blog Post 2006, Best Web Video 2006, and Biggest Stock Rumour 2006…. congratulations Dreamhost!
December 5th, 2006 at 7:46 pm
Can you believe this? I read this, then I saw it on Digg as if it were serious!
Some folks will Digg anything. ;) Good job, guys!
December 5th, 2006 at 7:52 pm
If DH sells to google,
how ’bout a kick down?
say, a cool grand for every hostee?
i will begin the gossip mill immediately.
December 5th, 2006 at 7:55 pm
heh. dugg
December 5th, 2006 at 7:56 pm
Yeah, the DH newsletter is the only one that I get that I always enjoy reading. The rest I read to keep up to date with news and technology.
I too am with the anon. coward and Frank – if Google bought DH, I would amscray.
And hey Josh, I have a humanitarian non-profit site, but it’s not a 501 site – can I get half-off?
December 5th, 2006 at 8:11 pm
hehe, well you should have started it as just “Google Buys Dreamhost” ..that way new readers would just assume the title to be true ..but ppl keep reading with the current title and realize its all a farce.
December 5th, 2006 at 8:53 pm
My dad works at Google. I told him to send an email to Larry Page regarding the acquisition. ;)
Seriously though, he works at Google. :D
December 5th, 2006 at 9:26 pm
If anything, this was the best blog entry I’ve read hands down in a very long time. Quite amusing and very worth watching for that ‘just in case’ factor. Seriously one of those things that make you go hum…
December 5th, 2006 at 9:42 pm
Google does not need to buy dreamhost. It has enough problems of it’s own. :D
The updates are cool.
December 5th, 2006 at 9:47 pm
There are at least a few DreamHost customers who work at Google… ;)
December 5th, 2006 at 9:50 pm
Any chance you guys could recompile ffmpeg with mp3 enabled so the audio actually works?
December 5th, 2006 at 9:50 pm
Any way that y’all can get that goodies page to convert wmvs also? !
December 5th, 2006 at 11:14 pm
Yeah, seriously..
I wish my work emails were this entertaining.
December 5th, 2006 at 11:38 pm
Hey, long time hoster, first time poster.
I too am having audio issues with the Flash player. I just get that same in/out static-y stuff referenced before.
I have a lot of video & audio on my site in various places and would love an all-in-one solution. Please keep working on it!
December 5th, 2006 at 11:58 pm
Haha, love the Google rumor. Dreamoogle anyone?
December 6th, 2006 at 12:24 am
Josh, you made my day! :)
Just love them DH Newsletters, and the racoon owns it all.
Speachless about the new features every month you serve. You are far by the best hosting EVER!
December 6th, 2006 at 12:42 am
Nice updates, thanks!
December 6th, 2006 at 12:47 am
That video is pretty dark. I couldn’t see anything. But I love DreamHost, so I’m not complaining!
The funny thing I’ve noticed about YouTube and sites like it is, the videos don’t look all that great (in quality) on the site, but if I download them and view them through my Flash video player, they often look really good!
December 6th, 2006 at 1:27 am
Many thanks Josh, been with you guys since 1997 (possibly one of the first few customers?) and still loving the stuff you do and provide.
Only a few requests…
- Servers in the UK?
- Support for ASP?
Isn’t there some sort of parser for ASP that runs on Unix?
Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee?
Cheers, Ash!
December 6th, 2006 at 1:44 am
Dreamhost ci prova…
A farsi comprare da ggooooogle. Pazzi quelli di Dreamhost, però mica tanto.
Anche perchè, a parte forse Blogger, Google non ha mai comprato un servizio di hosting….
December 6th, 2006 at 1:46 am
All these posts that describe the sound being up the swany but no response. Seems a little hammy to me. (‘Scuse the English english).
The sound doesn’t work on my Mac. Is this a case of ‘designed for PC only’ type problems.
Please include us guys in your thinking.
Still loving you.
December 6th, 2006 at 1:56 am
Dugg! I love Dreamhost!
December 6th, 2006 at 2:32 am
Cool, that flv converter is exactly what I needed.
December 6th, 2006 at 2:37 am
It’s not fair what you’re doing, spreading false rumours around just for your profit.
It looks like you’re dying to get bought by Google. One could infer you either have some internal problems and you’ll shut your business down soon (unless a big guy buys you), or you simply want a share of Google’s profits.
This stinks.
December 6th, 2006 at 2:43 am
I have lots of media on my site, will be looking on that media.dreamhost thingie right now..
December 6th, 2006 at 2:56 am
Re: comment 46
Or mysterious option number three: Its a joke!
Perhaps your guess that DreamHost is about to shut down will turn into a huge rumor and they will end up suing you for millions just to pay all the creditors after they go bankrupt.
In your (stinky) bizarro world you are probably very scared right now.

I can’t believe you want to make money; how disgusting for a private company! And you envy companies that have been acquired for phenonmenal values: dispicable capitalist! If you were to profit from an aquisition, know that we will only remain your customers if you distrubute ALL such premium to us, your customers, and keep none for yourselves. After all, it is we, the common customer, who have made you what you are! You are nothing without us. Nothing!
And no more jokes! Your supposed sarcasm is a thin veil for the greed induced rumors you are trying to spread.
Now that you’re PROPERLY chastened (#46 went a little too easy on you), may I mention that your raccoon video is so dark I can’t see much of anything. I guess #46 is right, you stink. Actually, considering that nobody else has complained of the same I probably just have a weird or corrupt codec. But if not: I’m running Firefox 2.0 on WinXP.
December 6th, 2006 at 4:36 am
so in other words we need to buy some google stock then sell it right away after they buy you!
December 6th, 2006 at 4:42 am
DROOGLE!
I’m buyin’ – here goes the 401(k) funds, here goes the IRA, here goes the piggy-bank, the envelope in the safe, and the pocket change…
I’m all in.
Josh – when is the DROOGLE merger news going to hit the fan, ’cause I need some time to plan my retirement party!
And finally: “Objects in blog are closer than they appear” (you heard it here first).

December 6th, 2006 at 5:07 am
I for one enjoy the sense of humor. Of all the seriousness that goes on in the world, it’s nice to get to smile every now and then. So…thanks for adding one to my face today.
December 6th, 2006 at 5:08 am
dreamhost, dreamhost, dreamhost, dreamhost? Hum that felt nice, i like dreamhost, the video thingy looks OK, but the click to play is a bit small if you guys could put some graphic or bigger text that would be real nice.
Also We need a DreamTube Search Engine, so we can have a portal with all the dreamhost videos, and a search engine, this idea is free ;)
December 6th, 2006 at 5:09 am
haha, it seems that Google stock is on a constant hike these days. Hopefully Dreamhost won’t be bought by Google so soon. lol
December 6th, 2006 at 5:20 am
To #49: Yeah, I realized my comment would have the potential (in a stinky-bizzaro-doom scenario) to spread bad rumors about DH, with all the consequences, but only after submitting it. I hope it doesn’t go like that, since I am their customer as well.
In fact, my best guess was actually the 2nd option (DH would like to “marry” Google, for their profits), but I did not make that clear at all in my comment. If DH fears a doom scenario because of potential bad rumours about them, then, DH, please feel free to delete my comment. I see spreading unfair bad rumours at least as bad as spreading unfair good rumours, and that’s the last thing I’d like to do.
Maybe the last sentence was harsh, but to me business does not mean unfair practices. Gaining money is not something unfair, #51, but spreading fake rumours in order to gain money (or other advantages) is. And unfair practices do not smell well…
December 6th, 2006 at 5:23 am
I’ve got an even better idea: If you guys do get bought out by The Googlebeast, give each one of your loyal, pre-Googlebeast customers one share of Google stock.
Please?
December 6th, 2006 at 5:24 am
Maybe this is more important than the rest of my comments:
Congratulations DH for your idea with the media tools!
Nevertheless, your video example is not very good, it shows almost entirely black on my screen, so please do something about that.
December 6th, 2006 at 6:03 am
NO!!!!!! I thought i had finally gotten away from google. There everywhere i turn. In my dreams, on my computer, even on some ones car. I thought aww…. the best host is right here, than bam, google…. NO!!!!!!! Make them pay more than they should…. if something ever turns into reality. I just hope google leaves it the way it is and dosn’t turn it into a crappy version of GEOCITIES. >>>

I laughed, I cried.
This was a great blog post.
December 6th, 2006 at 6:33 am
The flv converter seems to work but the code the email gives you doesn’t seem to. Neither is the wordpress button it says will appear on the post form visible in any of my wordpress installs
(Actually I’d rather you didn’t go installing plugins willy nilly on my blogs, even though they’re set up with the one click thingie)
Using an embed code I got somewhere else did work though
December 6th, 2006 at 6:40 am
Google’s hella creepy. I won’t let them host anything.
December 6th, 2006 at 7:12 am
You’re the best! I love reading your posts. =D
December 6th, 2006 at 7:41 am
Why the **** do you think Google would be remotely interested in buying a web hosting company, when they can easily (and have been in the process of doing so) make their own hosting company? Don’t get me wrong, I love my Dreamhost hosting, but I think you’re going on a limb thinking Google would want to buy you for making a (mostly) useless media tool.
December 6th, 2006 at 7:58 am
Thank you for making me laugh at work.
And all I really want to say to everyone here is..
“I love youuuu, youuu love meeeee….”
la la la
December 6th, 2006 at 8:04 am
Josh, you ROCK! full stop.
December 6th, 2006 at 8:23 am
The video shows up very dark for me too and I cannot see your wife at all, both in Firefox 2 and IE 6 on WinXP.
December 6th, 2006 at 8:35 am
Any chance you could strike some sort of a deal with LiveJournal, so that one could post vids also there?
December 6th, 2006 at 9:05 am
To #64,
ya, you are right ;) google will start its own hosting company
December 6th, 2006 at 9:09 am
I can’t believe I read the newsletter my web host service sends me _and_ follow the links to read more. It’s either an incredibly funny newsletter or a slow day at work. ;)
December 6th, 2006 at 9:20 am
to #69
I wanted to say the same, but technically and legally that is pretty complex problem, as far as goes my understanding
December 6th, 2006 at 9:31 am
Think more in the ‘whimsical’ frame of mind, Glenn.
DreamHost is the most interactive hosting firm – with THE brightest team putting together (from what i’ve seen from web hosts) THE most comprehensive assortment of web based software.
For all the people that find qualm and revoke within the words of these newsletters. Don’t get so emotionally involved.
Hand over fist. Ciao.
December 6th, 2006 at 9:52 am
I enjoy reading your blogs. thumbs up! :oP
December 6th, 2006 at 10:27 am
Video is too dark to see here too. It’s at night, I get it. But I don’t see any racoon, nor wife.
December 6th, 2006 at 10:39 am
Kiaora from downunder.
Yeah I love your style…you should write one of these every 2 weeks instead of once a month. We know a good thing when we see one…therefore we are here to stay. Keep it up!!!!
Cheers…Rudy
December 6th, 2006 at 10:40 am
Oh, I
December 6th, 2006 at 10:44 am
Bother. What I meant to say is I’m glad Dreamhost hasn’t lost its sense of humor over the years. Other companies could host my website, but I doubt they could match this level of gleeful entertainment. If only all my friends were this funny.
I am always cheerful when it comes time to pay the hosting bill.
December 6th, 2006 at 10:57 am
Well you got me, this is the first “BLOG” I have ever read…I’m 41, that’s 82 in “Internet Years” and you got me. I’ll forward this to my cousin who works at Google for their enjoyment, It’ll be on their intra-net within seconds of her receiving it…I’m sure. Hope you get more than a giggle from google and if you do, share the wealth with the man who’s gotten you in, and closer to retirement. Live Aloha, Paul
December 6th, 2006 at 12:57 pm
I was thinking about using this month’s rewards balance to buy Dreamhost and Google, just to ruin this funny joke that some people are actually taking seriously.
I think if anything were to go down between Google & Dreamhost, it would be Google stealing Josh away to do their blogs, newsletters, etc… I think the better rumor would have been, “Google offers Dallas $1.66 billion in stock for Josh & 1 free-for-life Strictly Business hosting plan.”
December 6th, 2006 at 1:06 pm
We would absolutely give Google a free Strictly Business plan for $1.6 billion in stock.
Google, you surely have our number. Call us some time!

Hi, I am a newbie to your site. This is the first blog I have read, but it was kind of funny. Ironically I suck at figuring out what to do with my site. Can someone contact me? I get my emails thus far at the same name as my website at google dot com
December 6th, 2006 at 5:15 pm
In other news, Google bought Josh for an outrageous $7.03.
December 6th, 2006 at 5:22 pm
It is a bit funny. I just saw on TV that Google is going to buy one of your competitors. (not sure if I’m allowed to post their name here)

your hosting service is terrible. you oversell and don’t give what you promise customers. why would google purchase you?
google should blacklist you for even thinking they would purchase your hosting. WHAT A JOKE.
i pity anyone who is stupid enough to even be hosted by your website.
thanks but no thanks.

Congrats and kudos for licensing joeran’s player! I have been using it for a while and I am glad he is getting some good exposure (and cash!). I searched far and wide for a flash player for a long time before finally coming across his stuff.
You are doing us a great service.

I just opened a hosting account on Dreamhost and have been happy so far. I love the way they set up the one-button installs on some of the major apps. Makes it easier for me if I wanted to use them. I’m thinking about moving other domains over to them as long as I can get the good price break with the coupon code.

Please, please can you get a handle on the current state of DreamHost *before* you start seriously considering plans for Google-type world domination?
For four or five *years* I have been a happy and loyal DreamHost customer. I’ve always been so thrilled by technical support response times, by the inexpensive hosting plans, and by the fact that I never experienced any downtime at all. (I have dozens and dozens of referrals because I’ve convinced so many other people that DreamHost is the best host on the web.)
But something happened at the start of this Fall. For a few months now it seems like my sites go offline every other day. I haven’t gone an entire week since August or September without a mysql failure or a network issue causing at least one (if not *all*) of my sites to go down. What has happened over there? I just don’t understand.

Hey, Hawleywood:
Yes, Dreamhost is the most “interactive” firm or whatever; but they have their downsides and issues, but I won’t go into that…. I love these newsletters, they can be uplifitingly funny, while carrying a serious note. But this is not the first time that it has either been hinted or explicitly said that Google will or would buy out Dreamhost. I don’t know if they’re serious or just joking around. Problem is that Google would not have an issue competing, let alone that Google would most likely end up a monopoly in the hosting business (think about that, they already dominate a large section of most everything else), so buying out Dreamhost would add more debt to their bills. Google would turn into the Wal-Mart of hosting (sadly, GoCrappy may already have other hosts beat).

I’m a bit distressed that you are trying to pass Jeroen Wijering’s media players off as your own fantastic creation (over at media.dreamhost.com). You don’t even attribute them according to the terms in his Creative Commons license, or even mention they’re under a Creative Commons license!
Anyone can get those two Flash players over at Jeroen’s site, jeroenwijering.com – and receive proper support there along with proper upgrades. Dreamhost, this is nothing special. Lame, in fact.

Oh, Dreamhost – why are you wasting valuble CPU minutes by offering on-server conversion? Link to FLV conversion software like Media Converter or RIVA instead, so these (assumedly) FFMPEG conversions don’t start taking over servers.
