Get to Know Us!
November 3, 2006 on 2:04 pm | In Business, Tech News by Josh Jones | 34 Comments
Who are the masterminds behind this operation anyway?
Wouldn’t you like to know?
Well, your chance is finally nigh.. in their first public appearance ever, both Josh and Dallas have been invited to speak on a panel at ISPCON in Santa Clara, CA, this Wednesday, November 8th, @ 4:15pm.

The panel is entitled What the Web 2.0?
And I guess it marks the official beginning of our wildly successful speaking careers.
All I can say is… FINALLY!!! It’s all starting to pay off, and my raging ego can finally relax a smidge.
Joel on Software ain’t got nothing on Josh on Hosting.
I hope they don’t expect us to prepare.

November 3rd, 2006 at 2:24 pm

5. SquirrelMail replaced with RoundCube
November 3rd, 2006 at 2:37 pm
I will second the request for trac as a one click.
November 3rd, 2006 at 2:53 pm
Is Roundcube even out of beta yet?

My self (Peter) and the band (Stohttp://www.storytoldmusic.com/ry Told) might be coming out to this simply to learn about the approach we are taking. A marriage of music and technology, you could say.
Perhaps we will meet you two (as we JUST signed up for DreamHost) there and chitchat about the future :)

It’s very easy to compile Python yourself. You just have to download, extract, configure (with –prefix=/home/you/local or something), make, make install*, add /home/you/local/bin to your path, and start using “#!/usr/bin/env python2.5″ in your scripts.
With a one-click install of Trac, I think DH has said that Trac won’t work with the one-click install system easily.
* Or make altinstall if you don’t want it to create a “python” hardlink pointing to “python2.5″.

Yay trac!
Roundcube is still in beta. I would like to see squirrelmail replaced with something else though.

Add /home/you/local/bin to your path before /usr/bin, of course.
That was a lot of steps, but it’s really very easy.

Hey guys, have fun up here in Santa Clara — Would come and see you, but then I saw the $250 per day price tag, and… no. Too bad Great America won’t be open, you’ll be right next door.

Re: Trac, I tried the install instructions for the first time the other week and I got so lost and annoyed that I had to stop. Trac does some odd things.. it’s not an easy program to set up under a shared hosting environment (much less one-click install.) On top of that, their MySQL support is still listed as experimental, and of course we don’t run postgres. I suspect it’s going to be a while (if ever.)

The DreamTracInstall script worked wonderfully for me, requiring next to no effort on my part.
Installing Trac w/o that script it a royal pain and took me around 6 hours to complete successfully.

I hope we’ll be able to see it later on Youtube or Google Video! :)

Josh,
I see you’re still proud of your pic that scored an 8 on Hot or Not back in ‘99!

@Mike Bianco
Great link to the automated script to install Trac.
It would seem to me that if a bash shell can be run to install Trac, that a One-click install should now be fairly start forward to create for DreamHost’s Panel system for all of us to use.

well, too damn slow!!
teh junk mail filter either blocks or delets some incoming mails.. instead of delivering to junk mail folder!
any idea?
November 6th, 2006 at 11:21 am
“any idea?”
Yeah, here’s one: Contact support through the proper channels, rather than make random posts on totally irrelevant blog posts.
I know, it sounds crazy, but give it a try. It seems to work for thousands of other customers.

“Hello! Is this the help desk??!?!”
Ummmm, no…

My wishlist:
1. Fix the slowass connection to Sweden (and europe?) – it’s not fair to have american friends browse your server fast as hell while I’m not getting speeds higher than 300kbps(down) and 100kbps(up)…

1. PostgreSQL will be good
2. Trac as one-click install would be good
3. Subversion from https would be good?

I am awaiting a new post with more information on how Josh and Dallas faired at ISPCON.
I also think I need rss feeds of this blog to go to my text message on my cell phone…has anyone developed that yet?

[...] Nobody showed up at our talk. We’ll post a video when we get one from ISPCon. It’s too bad we don’t have one yet, because in my country, they would go crazy for my talk. Dallas, not so much… [...]

Now that I live a few thousand miles away (Nairobi) I suppose meeting Josh and Dallas may not be on the cards…. But its good to know your speaking engagements are fast growing in number. Please prepare…somewhat…we’d hate for you to embarass all of us who preach ‘Dreamhost Rules!’.
