The DreamHost Fireside
June 23, 2006 on 1:24 pm | In Insider View, New Features by Josh Jones |
Much like our last good president, DreamHost is taking it to the people with the new (beta?) chat.dreamhost.com Customer chat server!
Being the cheap bastards that we are, we’re just using the free trial version of sigmachat for it, but hey, seems pretty good so far.
ANYTIME you want, feel free to visit the chatroom and chat it up with other DreamHost customers.. get some help, give some help, rag on Josh, whatever!
Keep in mind, there are NOT any DreamHost employees in there.. so never give out any sensitive info in the chat room!
With one exception.
Today, from 3:30 to 4:30pm PDT, DreamHost Head Honcho, and Tetris DS player extraordinaire, Josh Jones, will be in the chatroom (my username will be listed in the title on the page)! So feel free to drop by!
If we all have a fun time, we’ll maybe make it a weekly thing!
If people are mean to me, I’ll screw up DNS for everyone to exact my revenge.

There are also some of us who hang in #dreamhost on irc.freenode.org
Official staffers have been seen to pass by.

seems like you got the revenge in a little early… ie: yesterday

Nice feature, but why not use Campfire? http://campfirenow.com
It has a nicer interface, and is a little better on dialup.
June 23rd, 2006 at 4:25 pm
Looks good. Too bad it isn’t IRC, though.
June 23rd, 2006 at 4:35 pm
I gotta agree with everybody else here. This is nice, but we should stick with irc, probably the one we already have.

My email has been screwed for over two days now and I haven’t been mean to you! :-/

Josh, seriously no one uses that java app. Drop by #dreamhost on irc.freenode.org where all the cool kids hangout.
You might even want to consider changing sigmachat to a irc applet.

I’ll add another vote for IRC, why not set up a DH irc server and allow the dh customers to create channels to add chat to their sites. I found a great java irc client i used when i had chat on my site.

Bob, I think one of the major reasons for choosing freenode was it was off network which would be useful if Josh were to b0rk the DNS or the network. :P

Another vote for IRC and pjirc.

I chatted with my other personalities for a few minutes and then exited. It made a good job of closing down my Firefox session!

WHAT’S THE POINT OF CHAT IF SUPPORT CAN’T EVEN GET A SIMPLE IMAP AND POP3 SERVER RUNNING PROPERLY??
June 25th, 2006 at 4:32 pm
Whats the point of your comment if you can’t get a “simple” IMAP and POP3 server running either?
What’s the point of chat if it crashes Firefox every time I login?
Thre are some questions that can never be answered… ;)
June 26th, 2006 at 3:06 am
Ahh this is crashing my Firefox too but the idea is AWESOMEE!!

If anyone wants a java chat interface to the freenode dreamhost chat room i’ll stick one up…? Just shout (or reply here)!

This is a waste of dreamhost.com’s money. I don’t know how much this chat script costs, but I dont think its needed. I’d rather see that money go to improvments of dreamhost. I mean.. if you can improve dreamhost enough.. nobody will need chat!
June 27th, 2006 at 11:07 am
the chat isn’t costing them anything since it’s the free trial…
June 27th, 2006 at 12:34 pm
But the chat _server_ probably is.
June 27th, 2006 at 12:50 pm
it’s hosted on sigma chats server O_o
June 28th, 2006 at 2:40 pm
Tetris DS! What’s your friend code?

I already get my ass handed to me by everyone, might as well be someone I already give money to.
June 29th, 2006 at 3:27 am
I just got the monthly newsletter. Thank you for an entertaining read.
June 29th, 2006 at 8:35 am
It will cost them money once the trial is over.
June 29th, 2006 at 10:55 am
It probably costs about 10p to run a chat server. Who caressssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
And Java chat sucks for the normal person. Flashflashlflash or something.
And FANTASTICCCCCCCCCC this page validates 100%

I hope this is the way to get the attention of someone in charge.
Someone needs to have a chat with the Dreamhost tech support team, emphasizing the idea of continuity of service and appropriate time scales for addressing a problem.
Here’s my complaint:
http://www.frihost.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=349309#349309
I have worked in tech support and customer service, so I have a realistic idea about how things work, and I don’t get “irate” easily. However, now I’m irate. There’s no reason why the run-around should go on for over a month.
June 29th, 2006 at 10:14 pm
I thank you for anything you can do. I can’t tell you how frustrating it is. At the very least there needs to be a continuity between the support emails so each person knows what the last few people did.
As a sign of good faith, I’ll delete my complaint from the forum.

I really appreciate that you looked into this on the spot. I sent you a longer note with my thoughts on the whole thing, and I hope you’ll find it useful. The scenario you mention sounds exactly like what happened, and it just got magnified by the long period of time involved.

I’m not pretty sure if this is te best place ma make this comment, but a fast error reporting system would be good.
By example right now holt.dreamhost.com is serving index.php files to download instead fo processing them.
My scripts are out there being downloaded with passwords and all (damn, I havent tougth about that), but make a full error reporting trougth the panel is out my time right now.
It should be something like: “Guys holt isn’t responding, could yo check it please”.
do you understand?, some way in wich we could report system outages easy and fast.
cheers!!! and please check holt I don’t the idea of my passwords being public.

I can only start to hope that DreamHost, when they start hosting their own dedicated servers again, will have pricing that rivals the following
http://www.cari.net/Dedicated-Servers/dedicated-servers-by-processor.php#pentium4
Cost: $69/mo
Processor: Pentium 4 3.0GHz
Cache (L2): 2MB
Minimum RAM: 1GB
Storage: 160GB SATA2
.

I provided the incorrect link in my previous post about hoping that DreamHost will upgrade their dedicated servers specs (once they start hosting dedicated servers again).
Listed below is the correct link:

Dreamhost already has an unofficial channel at Freenode. Why dont you use CGI:IRC to integrate that room online.
