The Big 2-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh!

January 24, 2006 on 5:55 pm | In Insider View, Updates by Josh Jones |

That's 200,000 domains, suckers!

Well, it’s official.

According to webhosting.info, DreamHost is now 6 figures into 6 figures. We just passed 200,000 hosted domains yesterday, putting us as the 39th biggest web host in the world!

I’m not sure exactly how they get their figures.. and the numbers don’t include sub-domains or ccTLDs (like .la, .cc, .nu, .etc…), but we feel like celebrating regardless!

To do so, we’re going to post a little graph Nate made 13 months ago estimating how big we’d be vs. a few of our favorite competitors based on growth rates at the time!

Tsk, such language, Nate!

Go big green!

Nate actually wasn’t too far off, except that we grew a lot more and those other guys grew a lot less. In fact, as we crossed the 200K barrier we also crossed Hostway!

Of course, lots of domains != lots of money.. not by a long shot. All of these guys (except LunarPages, ha!) probably take in way more bucks than us. But it’s still nice to think that something like 1/300th of the domains on the Internet are in our sweaty little hands!

And that’s not even counting this blog!

And just to celebrate you’re offering the first 100 people who comment on this post an additional free paid domain name for the life of their account? Wow! Cool! Thanks guys and congrats ;)

Well, you all deserve the success. I have nothing but good things to say about DreamHost after my first year here.

No, Josh will be announcing that DreamHost will be building a giant data center over the next 5 years that will have helipads for each employee.

The new data center will have more than enough power so that DH can start selling dedicated boxes again. Josh will also bring back the unlisted phone number so we can call in and listen to the little red monkey song while we wait for tech support to reply via e-mail.

Josh will also drop the price of static ips, diversify the uplink providers more, offer snmp graphs, redo the status page, invent a SIP/Jabber protocol and then add that to all shared hosting plans, take over the world, recode the web panel to allow reselling, offer a new VPS semi-dedicated hosting package and send out all the tennis rackets and checks he promised last year all by the next edition of the DreamHost super überpacked newsletter.

    You are better than 39th.

For instance i have a domain at gandi.net (it’s a registrar) using their dns server.

So, my domain is counted to be hosted by gandi.net, even if dns point @ IP to dreamhost.

It’s the same for domains at zoneedit : (near) only dns service
And here, i don’t count every parking page…

Yeah, it’s not super duper accurate but it’s a good way to (generally) compare shared web hosts apples to apples.

We don’t generally pay attention to the big registrars like Dotster and whatnot because even though they do “hosting”, it’s not really what we do.

Congrats guys, we’ve always loved the service/price and general butt-loads of common sense. You guys get it, which is more than can be said about other hosts. Thanks!

(I’ll have to register a few more domains this year to help push you over 300k)

About 10 of those 200,000 are mine!
Congrats, I suspect allowing unlimited domain hosting had a huge hand in this?

I work at Hostway and host my stuff with Dreamhost.

Part of it’s that I started with Dreamhost and it’d be painful to switch. Part of it is price (no employee discount). The rest of it is to compare the Dreamhost blog and Hostway blog.

    (Anon for obvious reasons.)

Hi Guys, First of all i would like to congratulate you, on your achievement.. well done.

I’m from the UK and recently heard about your hosting services. I must admit i know quite a few people (10+) who want use your hosting service including me from the UK, but to be honest we all have some reservations, due to the fact you are providing so much hosting for a small price.

We don’t know if its for real or not, most of us are scared that you will over charge! I’m sorry if i have offended you guys, but i just wanted and had to ask is there any catch, and if there is anyway you can show us this hosting service is for real?

    thanks for your time.

    cheers

    Imran

Damn, I would like to leave Dreamhost, but all of the other hosts just plain suck ass. There is no justice when the host you are with doesn’t support Java Servlets (for chatting) and the other hosts don’t support unlimited mysql accounts nor 20 GB for less than 20 dollars a month. I’ll sell my soul to a host that has what Dreamhost has and more.

Hostway sucks, 150 MB for 8.95 a month and 39 setup fee. They won’t be getting my business. I’ll be with Dreamhost for another year I suppose and in that year, I suppose new features will be added and supported.

All of my other hosts sucked. I can guess that’s why they’re not a part of the top 40 and why i am with you.

Well, you could always try Yahoo Geocities (or whatever they are calling it now). I’m kidding of course, Dreamhost is pretty good for the price and that is why I have been here since 2002 and will be here until 2007. Perhaps longer depending on if any of my sites need more bandwidth or its own server.

not sure where to post this, so we’ll try here. I’m thinking about switching my site to dreamhost, and I’d like the opinions of some clients. My site is WordPress-based, and heavily visited (about 10,000 visits daily — according to AWStats). Our old host couldn’t handle the CPU load and didn’t really know how to configure the server to make it work, so I moved to a more techie hosting company. This one is a bit too DIY for me — I’m a novice server admin — and the support seems dodgy (although the user forums are nice and helpful).

I’d like to know what others’ experiences are with DreamHost, particularly those hosting high-trafic WP sites. Please email to wholesnocone-at-yahoo-dot-com …’twill be much appreciated.

    thanks…

Did any one else notice the ‘it’ after the ’sh’ in red? I mean, they may have added it later, but I only caught it the second time I’ve seen it.

[...] In less than a year, Dreamhost has already upgraded their already insane webhosting plans with up to 10 times more webspace and at least 2 times the bandwidth - an upgrade that comes to all existing Dreamhost customers. In other words, Level 1 plans start with 200 Gigs of webdisk and 2 TB of bandwidth. But is this really a good thing? I mean, we’ve already experienced a wackload of problems with Dreamhost that seem to be ongoing. Now, I’m not sure if the previous increase in bandwidth and diskspace was a direct correlation with the network issues that Dreamhost is facing. One thing that’s for sure is that these “insane” deals are in fact bringing Dreamhost a lot of new customers. According to their blog and webhosting.info, Dreamhost hosts (try say that 10 times) over 300, 000 domains and ranks 24th among the largest webhosts in the world - a nice jump from 200, 000 domains and ranked 39th back in January 2006. Having researched that, there is no doubt increasing bandwidth and diskspace means increased customers. Increased customers means increasing number of shared servers. Increasing shared servers means increasing network problems. Which begs the question again, is this upgrade really a good thing? I remember when some of my sites would take up to 20 seconds to load because of the high resource usage on the database server and there was little that Dreamhost Support could do except to tell me to wait as they tried figuring out the problems. [...]

    The Big 4-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh!…

This week’s stats from WebHosting.Info shows that DreamHost have reached another milestone. They are now hosting more than 400.000 domains.
Last January they passed 200,000 domains, in July they reached 300,000 domains and the last 6 months they …
