The OTHER Disaster

still matching funds to katrina..

Just a reminder… we’ll be sending in our matching-your-donation thing for Katrina soon. So far we’ve received $11,612.09 from 198 contributors, meaning we’ll be donating at least $23,124.18 to the Red Cross.

So, if you’re a DreamHost customer, time is running out to contribute (double) to a real disaster via our “Home > Charity” area.

Also, if your billing address in our system was in a zip code affected by Katrina (according to a list at ups.com) we gave you a free year of web hosting to hopefully give you one less thing to worry about right now.

Cool beans on that free year of hosting thing!

For the contributions.. how do you accept the donations? I wish you guys accepted checks with like CCBill so I can pay by check or do donations. Would make my life a lot easier!

Dreamhost does right by those in Katrina’s wake

Remember two weeks ago, when a sales rep of the internet service provider Globat demonstrated his amazing lack of empathy for the people of Plaquemines Parish? Well, here’s an example of the other, shinier side of that coin: in addition…

Chris, we apply your donation amount directly to your hosting account (just like if you added another service). So you could choose to pay for it by check if you like. Just disable auto rebill for your credit card from the ‘billing’->’make payments’ section of your web panel to avoid it being automatically billed to your credit card when your billing date arrives (if you have it setup to bill that way) and send in your check.

    Dan,

The issue is the “send in your check” portion of your statement. I dont like sending checks out. I prefer to just use them online like a credit card.. like I have a hundred other times with other websites. Much rather use a check in this manner than using credit cards.

    Chris,
If your bank provides you with a Debit card with the Visa/Mastercard logo on it it will work like a credit card but draw on your checking account funds. Currently we do not have plans, that I know of, to accept true digital checks using ABA Routing+Account numbers.

It’s little bits like this that confirm to me that I picked the right host when choosing for my site. Thanks for continuing to rock (and/or roll), DH.
