Router still mad.
September 13, 2005 on 9:04 pm | In Foobars, Updates by Josh Jones |Just an update.. we’re still working on the router, we’ve even brought in an outside network consultant and have been on with Cisco support and it’s still mysterious.
Just keeping people updated.. there won’t be any more updates about the packet loss until we’ve fixed it (at which point, we’ll update)..

Probably sounds strange, but if they can’t figure it out, let me know.

I just wanted to say I signed up for hosting yesterday and the first thing I did, naturally, was upload a speed test file. I had a feeling the whole service was too good to be true (shell access on shared hosting? pshaw.) and the 20kb/s download rate I was getting kinda grounded that thought (or I figured you had some weird method of bandwidth throttling).
…But then I read this blog! And now all’s right with the world.
Good luck with everything.

sounds like one of those gremlines in the mashine… i wouldnt be suprised if you end up replacing it for a short while, while you run tests on the current one to find out whats wrong without disrupting any more service…

Anthony–
It actually isn’t too good to be true. I’ve been with DreamHost since 1999, and aside from this power outage, they’ve been spectacular.
That said… DreamHost: Buy more generators and host email in a different building (city!) than web sites, because I’ll give you stern looks of dissappointment if I’m left without either ever again.
Hmmm… DH could start a new web hosting company in one of those old missle silos, designed around the concept of surviving a nuclear attack… for a premium of course. ;)

I just wanted to let everyone know that even though the guys at Dreamhost have had their hands full with the power outage that tey took the time to correct a stupid decision on my part that really caused them more work than me. These guys ROCK!
If you don’t host with them now then you need too. Its amazing that even though they have 140,000+ hosted sites, they manage and respond to support as if they have 140 hosted sites. I’d like to know how they do it but I’m sure its a trade secret.

You guys rock. The downtime was a pain in the ass but between the blog and the status page, info makes up for all of it.
No go kick some DWP ass :D

I echo those sentiments. Been with Dreamhost since 2000, by far the most amazing hosting company I’ve ever had. I’ve also seen their incredibly massive & amazingly organized cages (free the monkey) out in LA (used to work for a company with a cage across the floor), and met a few of the guys. Top notch people, management & service…this one was out of their control. But knowing how they operate I’m sure they’ll implement further redundancy measures to make sure it doesn’t affect them again.
Thanks DH !!

I’ll save my comments for when things are back to normal.. site has been slower than heck after the power outage.

Uploading seems very slow to ftp servers, is this related?

While I agree that Dreamhost has great people, and great support, this two day outage (and it is an outage for us - our website is pretty much non-functional unless your method of performance is measured with a sundial) is unacceptable for business hosting. If I simply had a personal site … no biggie, but this is coming out of my wallet.
We have lost money because of this, looking at the number of orders we normally process vs. the amount in the last two days. Online shoppers go elsewhere when your site doesn’t load.

My sites are still incredibly slow. this is starting to get really annoying

While I know that everyone at DH means well and intentions are all good, I have to agree with Brian.
This isn’t a rant. It’s a plea. The sites I host are a mix of personal and small business and this has not. been. good.
Fix the immediate crisis and take a few minutes for a deep breath. But I have to say that if I don’t see some real changes in DH’s support proceedures by the end of the year I may have no choice but to cash out my referrals and go elsewhere. I have people to answer to.
I don’t fault DH for going offline for a few hours. I know that situation was out of their control. My concern is in how difficult and slow it is to get support…on a good day. Impossible when something major goes wrong.

Sam… not to be a Troll, but it’s not like your site is incredibly active. I’m sure with your last update posted on your site being 30 days ago, all the visitors to your site are extremely disappointed. Fix those broken images while you are at it too…
Guys, seriously, they are working the best they can with all the problems that are coming up. If you think you guys can solve the problems, why dont you do it then? It could be worse, we could have NOTHING at all.
Also, keep in mind that the power didnt just affect Dreamhost, it affected EVERYONE in that town so there are other residual effects that are outside of Dreamhosts control. I am sure the providers who provide bandwidth, etc are experiencing some simular issues too.
Lets just be patient and I am sure this will be resolved shortly.
