All Systems Go!
September 13, 2005 on 12:02 am | In Foobars, Updates by Josh Jones |
As of right now (just before midnight Pacific coast time), the final little hijinks have been worked out of everything as far as we can tell.
If you’re still having problems, please contact our support team and we’ll look into it.
Sorry about the problems. More info tomorrow.. we’re having a long day right now.

all good boys.
this is beyond your control…
but isn’t it funny how a black out in LA can effect the email of a dude down in australia {me}
the world is a small place.
September 13th, 2005 at 3:55 am
You still have way better uptime than any host I have found in the UK. I’ve found 2 or 3 downtime events every DAY is expected here :)
I think the only thing you could perhaps have done better is have backup mail servers in another location. But its none of my business

Everything was fine, and now one of my databases is down with a “Got an error: Bad ObjectDriver config: Connection error: Lost connection to MySQL server during query”
With 700 support requests in front of me, how many years will it take until I hear from someone?
I like Dreamhost…when it’s working which is most of the time. When it’s not, the support is NOT GOOD. Every other host I’ve encountered answers tickets in a quarter of the time Dreamhost does (some in as little as 15 minutes) or has phone support (your callback thing is NOT the same thing…you wait until the problem is fixed to pick up the phone!). So far, Dreamhost’s strength outweigh the weaknesses so I stay, but if I ever do leave this will be the reason.
So now I sit here with a MovableType back end that I can’t get to and wait. No idea what’s wrong. No idea when it will be back or what I can do about it. Bad enough when it’s me but when this happens on a site I host and support and I have a user yelling at me it’s maddening.
So you’re not “All Systems Go” until you deal with the support issues and find out why something like this happened in the first place.

I still keeping getting lots of errors with my email like…
ERROR : Connection dropped by imap-server.
Query: EXPUNGE
And after it says Answered next to my emails, but when I go to compose it says they weren’t sent..
September 13th, 2005 at 5:36 am
This isn’t the place for it I know … and I say this with the greatest respect and appreciation for your hosting skills … but those new graphics on the DreamHost site front page … come on guys, spend a few bucks on a professional graphic designer. You know it makes sense!
September 13th, 2005 at 5:36 am
At least one webserver appears to be down:

September 13th, 2005 at 7:47 am
that Di-Rect image might be the best picture ever in the universe.
September 13th, 2005 at 7:50 am
please don’t delete my comment again.
Dreamhost will not answer any of my emails or Andrew’s. There is no customer support, apparently. Even if you can’t get the problem fixed, Dreamhost, at least write us back. PLEASE HELP!!!!!
September 13th, 2005 at 7:52 am
Rocketbooms down. What happend?
September 13th, 2005 at 7:52 am
Good lord, I didn’t realize Dreamhost customers were such whiners (referring more to the previous blog entry). Dreamhost gives far better service than what you should really expect for what we pay — my old hosting company would go down if I so much as looked at the computer the wrong way.
Thanks for getting everything up and running again, DH, you guys rock!
September 13th, 2005 at 7:53 am
Thanks for showing how good your support is (ivm Rocketboom and others).
I’m searching a new webhost (for hosting some things I gonna publish soon). I was thinking about dreamhost. But now I know to NOT take it.
September 13th, 2005 at 7:53 am
True, they wrote
So I don’t think we’ll get anything today…
September 13th, 2005 at 7:54 am
Where is RocketBoom, I need my daily fix!!!
September 13th, 2005 at 7:54 am
C’mon Dreamhost…show Rocketboom some love!
Get them back online or at least an ETA!!
September 13th, 2005 at 7:56 am
The thing is EVERYTHING isn’t UP AND RUNNING, and they said they will be more info TOMORROW…
September 13th, 2005 at 8:11 am
everything is NOT up and running. my outlook email still can’t connect to your servers, my blog is slow and clunky at best, my website is down. Your servers keep dropping the connection to your webmail.
don’t you have remote backups? if not, why not.
September 13th, 2005 at 8:17 am
so slow….so very slow…please fix speed issues, lots of clients complaining, even thoes i dont host that i run and maintain. thanks!
September 13th, 2005 at 8:17 am
Everything is NOT up and running. Until Rocketboom is back, you’d better have every possible person working on the problem.
September 13th, 2005 at 8:17 am
Hey! Where’s our http://www.rocketboom.com? I missed my morning edition :(
September 13th, 2005 at 8:21 am
Still no Rocketboom…. 17:20 CET
September 13th, 2005 at 8:22 am
It would be great to see RB back up and running…least you could do is post and ETA on the comment board and let us all know when we are going to get our daily dose of Amanda. Some time frame would be appreciated.
September 13th, 2005 at 8:25 am

WTF is RocketBoom and why is it so much better than everyone else.
Stop spamming the blog other people want to know about what is going on and care about things other than RocketBoom.
Hopefully DH will cancel your account for Spamming.
September 13th, 2005 at 8:31 am
Good. Now, go buy yourself:
(a) A huge fucking Liebert, so when the building power fails again (and it will!) you won’t go down again…
and
(b) UPSs for each rack, so when the huge fucking Liebert you just bought fails (and it will!) you won’t go down again…
You probably aren’t going to lose a lot of customers this time, but if it happens again, you can bet it’ll be the end of Dreamhost.

I miss my daily rocketboom coverage. It’s 17:30 CET and today I have to go home from work very sad. :-(
Think about your responsibility for my mood.
September 13th, 2005 at 8:38 am
yea wtf is RocketBoom? Funny name tho! :D
September 13th, 2005 at 8:53 am
Maybe all the Rocketboom fans should go refresh….
September 13th, 2005 at 8:59 am
Where is rocketboom?????
pls, bring them back online!
regards from zürich…
September 13th, 2005 at 9:03 am
Where is rocketboom.com? I miss my morning show at the cyber-coffee house - “The Mekka,” Nevada City, CA.
September 13th, 2005 at 9:11 am
SQL database access is at a crawl, if it even works before timing out. This is not “all systems go.” Not even close.
September 13th, 2005 at 9:20 am
Hey, only 992 open support requests now. I don’t know what you guys are complaining about…the handful of folks dealing with the issue should be able to help you out in oh, 2 or 3 months?
Look, I know stuff happens. And I know we get a lot for our money with Dreamhost. But I have a friend who has been IM’ing me that *I* referred to Dreamhost who has been having trouble with her email for months and she gets nothing but excuses. That makes me look prettty foolish for my recommendation, don’t you think?
It’s all excuses…we deserve EXPLANATIONS. As I said upthread (before all the Rocketboom stuff), Dreamhost has had serious issues with their support system for…well, forever. At least since I started in December 2004. It’s never been good, it’s never been acceptable we just put up with it because we’re getting a lot for the money…when it works. Yesterday’s outtage only magnified a problem that has always been there.
September 13th, 2005 at 9:24 am
I just came in here to comment about how happy I am that you guys (along with my MySQL server) are back up. It’s good to know that when the network goes awry, that the main dreamhost sales site goes down too. On my last host, every time I had downtime, it seemed that the host’s sales site ran even faster. ArGH! Anyway, whoever these Rocketboom people are need to get some crack and ween themselves off their addiction to whatever site this is. What the heck?
September 13th, 2005 at 9:40 am
Warp Pipe is down as well. Please, someone look into fixing warppipe.com so I can play my GameCube online tonight. I have a tournament all setup that I’ve been waiting for all month.
Also the Warp Pipe forums are down. forums.warppipe.com.
September 13th, 2005 at 9:49 am
Rocketboom?
http://whois.sc/rocketboom.com
Boing Boing. Yes. Metafilter. Yes. Fark. Yes. Something Awful. Well of course. Rocketboom? No, can’t say I’ve heard of rocketboom, but look forward to tuning in when you get back online. For now, stop spamming the weblog and leave discussion open so we don’t have to wade through posts. This is not just one site down it is many.
C’mon people. If you have hosted with other companies in the past you should know that things like this happen.
And overall Dreamhost is far better than the other webhosts I have been with.
Patience.
Maybe now is the time to get off the computer for a day or two and go outside and interact with humans?
My twenty billion cents.
September 13th, 2005 at 10:01 am
Où est Rocketboom ? On le voit partout dans le monde. Veuillez ne pas me donner une autre raison de détester des Américains. Renvoyez Rocketboom !
September 13th, 2005 at 10:12 am
Wtf is with this on the rocketboom.com page?
“Rocketboom website is still down due to Dreamhost.
blah blah blah…
You can help by sending in an e-mail to:
support@dreamhost.com”
Are you completely insane?! Your solution to DreamHost responding slowly than you would like to support requests is to… INUNDATE THE SUPPORT QUEUE WITH SUPPORT REQUESTS????? You are either the stupidest person in the world or the most selfish or both.
I don’t know what RocketBoom is, and I don’t care. I think you should absolutely get your hosting pulled for this kind of nonsense. Other customers are going to suffer because of your actions. Get that message off that page at once.
September 13th, 2005 at 10:17 am
And another thing for people whining about dreamhost.com being up while your site is down–that’s where the control panel is (where they are collating support requests), and where the forums are, where this type of discussion is probably better suited.
Get a grip.
September 13th, 2005 at 10:23 am
Thanks. Keep up the great work!
September 13th, 2005 at 10:28 am
Mine works fine :P Try considering error handling when you make your own sites
September 13th, 2005 at 10:39 am
Bring our sites back bitchesssssssssss! :D
September 13th, 2005 at 10:39 am
The main problem I am having is with MySQL access, seems very slow. Static/PHP pages rendering fine, throw in a database and on some sites it takes much longer than normal. Anyone else suffering DB lag?
September 13th, 2005 at 11:16 am
Some of my sites are completely down again, and some of the mySQL DBs have been down all morning.
I need to tell my clients something ASAP. I’m getting phone calls.
Can you update the status page with the latest?
September 13th, 2005 at 11:31 am
Wow! It’s amazing how many geeky kid fans bad writing and a tight t-shirt will get you.
September 13th, 2005 at 11:39 am
Dear WTF?, there is only one problem here: Dreamhost claims everything is fine, but its not. Then when opening up a formal ticket, and not responding for 9hrs, it leaves you wondering what the problem is.
If the system page said there is still some problems, that would have been enough.
But Dreamhost is suggesting everything is fine.
So, what is one to do? How do we know if it is fine or not? Maybe they are all out to lunch because everything is so fine.
All we need is communication.
Its turns out I finally got them to respond after a friend called in with a special unpublished number.
This is a load of crap and no way to behave.
This tells me what I keep saying: Dreamhost is too big to handle all their clients.
It would have been fine for our site to be down for 2 days, I dont care, we are not a hospital. Our site is not imminent. But if they say all is fine, and then dont respond to our emergency site down requests, then that is a problem.
There is no argument against this.
If they are running around and too busy to respond to ind. requests, then they need to put up a system wide message that states things are not all systems-go.
LIVE AND LEARN DREAMHOST!! Its so easy to keep people like me at bay. We just need to know.
September 13th, 2005 at 11:53 am
Paying the Light Bill
I love my website host. Usually there are little to no problems. The knowlege base rocks, the service is quick-ish and the cost is well within my range.
There was a power outage in LA yesterday. Dreamhost is in LA. Despite having massive UPSs, severa…
September 13th, 2005 at 11:56 am
DH, you guys handled this great…. My site is slow but at least its still there. The last time the power died on my own PC I ended up having to reformat the disk!!!!!!
I don’t see why everyone is getting mad because your UPS systems lasted the maybe 15 minutes they are designed for (servers use a lot a power) and then your building generators failed… I’m sorry but I fail to see how any of this is your fault.
You guys have been fantastic on always answering our support questions, and all the people above should realize how many sites DH hosts and how many support requests you have to deal with!!!
Thanks for keeping my site safe on a situation you can’t control! Great job!
September 13th, 2005 at 12:09 pm
so, apparently Rocketboom can dish it, but they can’t take it. Any criticisms about how THEY responded to the situation in their comments section are removed right away.
September 13th, 2005 at 12:14 pm
Huh, now I’m getting a “not found” error on the Dreamhost main page itself.
September 13th, 2005 at 12:15 pm
I had just posted on my ISPs newsgroup about how good DreamHost was and what a great deal their services are. Then I went to check on the DreamHost web site and found it was down… doh.
I would definitely like to hear a report from DreamHost about why this all happened like why your generators suddenly died, why you don’t have machines that are able to shutdown gracefully, and how come all your network connections went down. More importantly we need to know what you’re going to do to prevent it happening again, when its going to be done, and how its being tested. As other people have pointed out, if you don’t provide this you will surely lose customers as soon as their year or whatever lock-in period is up.
You at least need the ability to have dreamhost.com (and arguably all hosted sites) fail over to a remote site so we can find out about what is going on. People like ZoneEdit provide this as a standard DNS feature. Its not good enough to rely on everyone knowing about status.dreamhost.com - plus that site doesn’t even provide the support phone numbers, it just redirects to cpanel which was down too. Doh!
September 13th, 2005 at 12:17 pm
Jon, try to not curse so much and we’ll keep your comments up.
You were off the mark though anyway:
No one is blaming Dreamhost for a power outage.
Again, there is only one complaint: The system is down, but they say the system is up and wont respond. This is typical. I’m fed up because it happens so often.
Not to worry Dreamhost, this is it. I’m shutting up and moving on. Trying to get help moving files and will quietly go back to my business once my site is up and running again
Thats the only complaint: no communication.
Over and out.
September 13th, 2005 at 12:19 pm
Damn, I cant even connect to my FTP anymore, I’m getting 530 ERROR!!!
September 13th, 2005 at 4:09 pm
I’m amazed at some of the gripes and low technical knowhow of web site owners here. People don’t seem to realize that a web site is an item, just like a car, it is physical, and it sits “somewhere.” If “somewhere” is toasted, then your site is too. Plain and simple. Just be glad your site wasn’t hosted in New Orleans.
Sure, web sites, being digital, can be replicated, multihomed, etc. However, that takes time and know how.
Maybe Dreamhost should put in a KB article on how to multi-home your site. :) You’ll need probably at least 2 web hosting companies, and your DNS will need to be hosted by a 3rd company, and keep short timeouts. That is one way anyway. Email gets complicated, but it can be done too.
For the rest of us, we just have to realize that no point in space can ever be 100% garanteed against disaster of some kind, especially human error . . .
September 13th, 2005 at 7:07 pm
Warp Pipe is still down :(
I missed my tourney and now I’m really worried. Nintendo is supposed to make an announcement about Revolution at the Tokyo Game show (Thursday) and I’m not sure if the forums will be back by then. I hope things are back to normal back then. I wish you luck Dreamhost.
September 13th, 2005 at 7:13 pm
Must…..Have…..Warp Pipe …… GOOD LUCK!
